Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Battles Back to Split with Saint Peter’s

Canisius freshman Renee Hester's first collegiate home run fueled a four-run second inning to help lead the Golden Griffins to a 6-2 victory in the second game of a MAAC softball doubleheader Friday afternoon at Jaroschak Field in Jersey City, N.J.

The win in the nightcap helped the Blue and Gold earn a split in the conference twinbill after the host Peacocks posted a 12-4 win in six innings in the day's first game. Canisius' record moved to 7-18 overall and 3-8 in MAAC play, while Saint Peter's saw its record move to 5-22 overall and 2-11 in conference action.

GAME ONE RECAP
A two-run homer in the top of the first by senior Bailey Alatorre and an RBI-single off the bat of sophomore Grace Walker gave the Griffs a 3-0 lead early in the first game of the day. Saint Peter's trimmed the Griffs' lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the second thanks to an RBI-double by Summer Solitaria.

In the fourth, Saint Peter's tied the game at 3-3 after Hannah Klotz drove in a pair with a double to center. That lead was short-lived, however, as Alatorre drove in her third RBI of the game in the top-half of the fifth with a double to left that pushed junior Ella Johel across the dish to make the score 4-3 in favor of Canisius.

A two-run homer with two outs in the fifth off the bat of Angela Tremarco put the Peacocks ahead for good and made the score 5-4 in favor of the home team. After Canisius stranded the potential game-tying run on second in the top-half of the sixth, the Peacocks' offense took over, scoring seven runs on five hits in the bottom-half of the sixth to end the game early thanks to the mercy rule at 12-4.

Alatorre went 3-for-3 with a homer, a double, three RBI and a run scored in the losing cause, while Johel added two hits, including a double, and scored twice. Freshman Michaela Sycalik went 1-for-3 with a double, as well.

Saint Peter's banged out a season-high 14 hits in the game one victory, with five Peacocks recording multi-hit performances in the win. Klotz ended the first game by going 3-for-4 with a double, a run scored and two runs batted in. Saint Peter's pitcher Morgan Lipansky improved her record to 3-6 in the circle after she allowed four runs on nine hits while fanning eight in a complete-game effort.

GAME TWO RECAP
In the top-half of the second inning, Hester got the scoring started for Canisius with a two-run homer to left, which also pushed fellow freshman Talia Yermian across the dish. Later in the frame, freshman Maddy Hans drew a bases-loaded walk to make the score 3-0, and then Johel gave the Griffs a 4-0 lead with an RBI on a fielder's choice that allowed junior Mia Martin to score from third.

In the fourth, Yermian tacked on two more runs for Canisius with a single to center that allowed Hans and junior Alyssa Onyeagwa to score to give the Griffs a 6-0 advantage. Those six runs were more than enough support for Canisius starter Olivia Manchester, who earned her third win of the season in the circle after she gave up two runs, both unearned, on five hits to go with five strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work.

Hans and sophomore Bella Martin each had a pair of hits in the victory for Canisius. Tremarco had two singles in the game two loss for Saint Peter's, which did not have a base runner reach second base until the sixth inning.

GAME NOTES
• Canisius leads the all-time series with Saint Peter's by a 64-14 count. The Peacocks' win in game one snapped the Griffs' eight-game win streak in the series.
• Alatorre's homer in the first game gives her four on the season, which ties her with Johel for the team lead.
• Alatorre extended her streak of reaching base safely to five straight.
• Hester is the ninth different Canisius player to hit a home run this season.
• Manchester has struck out five batters in three different games this season, and thirty-three of her 53 pitches on the day were strikes.

UP NEXT
Canisius will close out its three-game series with Saint Peter's on Saturday with a single game, set to start at noon. The contest will be broadcast live through the Peacocks Digital Network.
