Women's Lacrosse Tops Robert Morris

Moon Township, Pa. ? Junior Ashley Gray (pictured) tallied her 100th career point in addition to a team-leading four points to lead the Canisius women's lacrosse team to its first victory of the season. Canisius defeated Robert Morris Friday afternoon, 10-9.

“It is great to get our first win of the season,” said Canisius head coach Scott Teeter. “It was nice to pull out a close game but if we eliminate our mistakes, we won't find ourselves in that position. I am also happy for Ashley. It is great accomplishment for her to get her 100th career point early in her junior year. We brought her in to score and that is what she's done for us.”

Gray posted two goals and two assists to lead the Canisius offense. The junior also led the team with seven ground balls and four caused turnovers.

“It was nice to get our first win of the season out of the way,” Gray said. “We battled hard to the final whistle today and that is what we have to do to be successful the rest of the season.”

Sophomore Brett Poissant also netted two scores in a balanced Canisius attack. Eight different players scored for the Griffs with senior Lauren Walsh and freshmen Taylor Gray and Carly Quinn each recording two points on a goal and an assist. Junior Chelsea Martinez, sophomore Marissa Brown and freshman Emily Maguire also recorded goals.

Freshman Allison Daley recorded 10 saves to earn her first collegiate victory.

The first half was tight throughout. Trailing 4-3, the Griffs (0-3) tallied three-straight goals to take a two-goal advantage, 6-4. Ashley Gray started the run then Magurie and Poissant both netted goals to give Canisius advantage. Robert Morris (1-4) scored to pull within one but Martinez gave the Griffs a two-goal halftime advantage with her first goal of the afternoon.

Robert Morris started the second stanza strong, scoring the first three goals of the half to reclaim the lead. Canisius would answer right back when Brown and Walsh tallied goals to give the Griffs a 9-8 advantage with 19:58 left.

The Colonials would once again knot the game, scoring with 11:27 left in the contest. With 6:31 remaining, Robert Morris was whistled for a penalty, giving Quinn a free-position shot. Quinn calmly netted the game-winning score for her first collegiate goal. Daley would record two saves following Quinn's score and two late Robert Morris turnovers helped the Griffs win their first game of the season.

The Griffs return to the field on Sunday, hosting Binghamton at the Demske Sports Complex. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
