Women's Basketball Canisius College Athletics

Twelve First-Half 3-Pointers Lead Women's Basketball to Fifth Straight Win

Setting a program record with 14 3-pointers, including a 12-for-16 effort in the first half, the Canisius College women's basketball team defeated Detroit 80-59 at the Koessler Athletic Center on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Griffs improve to 8-4, having won of five straight and seven of their last eight. The 8-4 start is the first for Canisius since the 1994-95 season.

Sophomore Micayla Drysdale led Canisius with 18 points, making a career-high six 3-pointers on seven attempts. Senior Amanda Cavo had 12 points, on 4-of-6 from behind the arc in 14 minutes. Junior Brittan? Russell had 11 points, eight assists, four steals and zero turnovers while junior Ellie Radke had 10 points and five rebounds in 19 minutes. The eight turnovers committed by Canisius in the game were the fewest since the program went to the Division I level for the 1986-87 season.

“Detroit is a team that allows you to get looks on 3-pointers. We worked in practice to make the extra pass and find the open shooter. We did just that in the first half,” Canisius coach Terry Zeh said. “Our team moved the ball inside and kicked it back outside. I felt we didn't force those shots but took them in rhythm.”

The teams were tied at 17-17 after a free throw from Marie Warner with 10:35 left in the first half, and Canisius went on a 19-5 run during the next five minutes to break the game open. The Griffs didn't miss a shot during that stretch, making seven field goal attempts to go along with two free throws. After two 3-point field goal misses, the Griffs made four of their final five shots of the half, capped by a 3-pointer from Brianna Lucas with six seconds remaining to give Canisius a 49-33 halftime lead.

The Griffs used their defense to push the lead to as many as 28 points, opening the second half with a 15-3 run. During the stretch of seven and a half minutes, Canisius held Detroit to 1-for-7 shooting and forced five turnovers to extend the lead to 64-36 on a layup by freshman Katie Hart with 11:27 left.

Brigid Mulroy led Detroit (4-7) with 14 points while Zemora Davis and Lauren Allen each had 12 points for the Titans.

Canisius wraps up its non-conference schedule on Tuesday, when the Golden Griffins host Mount St. Mary's in the Koessler Athletic Center. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
