Hockey Faces Bentley in Atlantic Hockey Action

The Griffs hit the road for a pair of Atlantic Hockey games at Bentley on Friday and Saturday. Canisius currently sits in second place in the Atlantic Hockey standings and have won four-straight league games. The Falcons have posted a 2-2-1 league record.

AHEAD OF THE CURVE
? The Griffs are off to a strong start this season. Canisius currently sits in second place in the Atlantic Hockey standings, compiling a 4-1-1 league record.
? Canisius has already won five games this season. It took the Griffs until Jan. 5 to win its fifth game during the 2007-08 campaign.
? The Griffs have also won three road games this season, one more than their total from the entire 2007-08 season. Canisius went 2-15-5 away from home last year.
? Canisius has won its last four league games, its longest streak since the 2003-04 season. The last time the Griffs won five-straight conference games was from Jan. 9 to Jan. 21, 2001.
? Canisius' sweep versus AIC was the first for the Griffs since the 2005-06 season. The Griffs then followed with a sweep of Connecticut, the first time the Canisius has taken four points at home since the 2004-05 campaign.

PENALTY KILL SUCCESS
? Opponents have found it to be difficult to score when on the power play this season and if their not careful, the Griffs will add a goal.
? Canisius currently ranks second in Atlantic Hockey and 16th nationally by killing 89.5 percent of its power plays. During league play, the Griffs have allowed only one power-play score and lead the league with a 97.1 percent penalty kill.
? The Griffs have not allowed an extra-man score in their last five games and 32 penalty kills. The program's Division I record for consecutive penalties killed is 37, set last season.
? In addition to killing power plays, the Griffs have had success scoring while a man down. Canisius has tallied three short-handed goals this season, tied for the fourth-most in the country.
? Killing power plays have been key to the Griffs success this season. Canisius is 5-1-1 when allowing zero power-play goals. On the reverse end, the Griffs are 0-2-1 when allowing an extra-man score.
? Bentley has struggled on the power play this season, converting just 6.5 percent of it chances.

SAVING THE BEST FOR LAST
? The Griffs have saved their best for last this season. Through 10 games, the Griffs have dominated the third period of play, outscoring opponents, 14-4.
? Canisius' 14 third-period goals have accounted for 45.2 percent of its scoring this season. In league play, the Griffs have score 47.6 percent (10-21) of their goals in the third period.
? Three times this season, the Griffs have rallied in the third period to earn at least one point. Canisius trailed Holy Cross and Merrimack at the end of two and earned draws. Against Connecticut, the Griffs faced a 2-0 deficit but scored two goals in the third and added an overtime score for the victory.
? The Griffs' third-period come-from-behind victory over the Huskies was the first for Canisius since Jan. 6, 2007 versus Army. It was also the first time the Griffs overcame a two-goal deficit in the third period since Jan. 17, 2004 against Sacred Heart.

CANISIUS - BENTLEY SERIES
? In a series that dates back to the 1981-82 season, the Griffs hold a 17-10-3 advantage in the all-time series, including a 16-9-3 edge at the Division I level.
? Canisius took 3-of-4 points against the Falcons last season, fighting to a 1-1 draw in the opener and coming back with a 4-1 victory in the finale at the Amherst Pepsi Center.
? Andrew Loewen stopped 69-of-71 shots during the weekend series to earn Atlantic Hockey Goaltender of the Week honors. Cory Conacher was also honored by the league following the series against the Falcons, picking up Rookie of the Week accolades.
? Prior to the series last year, the Falcons had won the last four meetings between the two schools and 6-of-7 games.
? Canisius' first victory at the Division I level came against Bentley, defeating the Falcons 6-2 on Oct. 16, 1998.

ABOUT THE FALCONS
? Bentley is unbeaten in its last three conference games following a sweep by 12th-ranked Air Force. The Falcons defeated Connecticut in their only home game of the season and then took 3-of-4 points at Mercyhurst this past weekend.
? For the season, Bentley is 3-4-1 overall and 2-2-1 in Atlantic Hockey play.
? The Falcons are led offensively by senior Jeff Gumaer, who has tallied five goals, including two game-winning scores.
? Pat Percella and Dustin Cloutier rank second on the team with four points, Percella has posted three goals and an assist, while Cloutier has recorded a goal and three helpers.
? Erik Peterson, the 2007-08 Atlantic Hockey Rookie of the Year, has been held to three points this season on a goal and two assists.
? Kyle Rank and Joe Calvi have split time in goal for the Falcons this season. Rank is 1-2-1 on the season and has posted a goals against average of 2.93 and a save percentage of .899. Calvi is 2-2-0 during his sophomore year and owns a goals against average of 3.50 and a save percentage of .881.
