Saturday Nov. 15 will mark the final competition for Canisius cross
country teams. The men and women will compete at the NCAA
Championships, held in Van Cortland Park, Bronx, N.Y.
SEASON RECAP:
MAAC CHAMPIONSHIPS
Junior Vasilis Kariolis and senior Alex Brown finished first for Canisius to lead both cross country teams to a sixth-place finish. On the women's side four of 11 athletes finished in the top-25, including Brown in 15th place with a time of 22:59. Kariolis earned his season-best time to place 29th for the men in a time of 26:13.
LITTLE THREE
Junior Vasilis Kariolis and freshman Jill Shea both earned first place finishes to lead the Golden Griffins to top finish over both St. Bonaventure and long-time rival Niagara at the annual Little Three Championship Oct. 18. The women scored 15 points to earn their ninth title in the past 11 years, while the men earned 23 points in their seventh title in 11 years.
LEHIGH INVITATIONAL
For the Canisius men, junior Vasilis Kariolis crossed the line first in a time of 26:21, while freshman teammate Mark Kearney followed with a time of 27:18. In the women's event, freshman Jill Shea ran the course in 22:59, followed by teammates Samantha Garnet (23:02) and Julie Dahlkemper (23:21).
NATIONAL CATHOLIC CHAMPIONSHIPS
Juniors Samantha Garnet and Vasilis Kariolis were the top finishers for the Golden Griffins at the National Catholic Championships held at Notre Dame (South Bend, Ind.). The women finished ninth of 35 teams, while the men placed 15th of 35 teams. The ninth place finish is the best for the women at the National Catholic Championships since 1997, when the Blue and Gold came in fourth place.
FORDHAM FIASCO
Freshman Jill Shea came in as the Golden Griffins' top runner for the second time in her collegiate career. With a time of 20:03, Shea placed 30th among 233 participants.
Vasilis Kariolis, who led the men for the second time this season, finished in 28:50, placing him 51st of 273 competitors. Freshman Jonathan McDonald crossed the line in 66th-place with his time of 29:08. Freshman Mark Kearney also made his mark on the scoring, finishing 71st with a time of 29:14.
DUQUESNE DUALS
Canisius' men came out ranked fourth of the nine participating teams with a 5-3 record at the Duquesne Duals on Aug. 30. Leading the Canisius men was junior Vasilis Kariolis, earning 16th place of the 103 runners in the meet. The women's team finished third of the eight teams participating with a 5-2 record, following Duquesne at 7-0 and Pittsburgh at 6-1. Top runners for the women included seventh-place holder Jill Shea at 19:18, followed by fellow freshman Julie Dahlkemper at 19:41, who earned 13th place.
