Sophomore Brendan Brody scored 1:52 into the second overtime to lift the Canisius men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Western Michigan. The Griffs won their second-straight game and concluded their non-conference schedule with a 4-6-1 record.
“Any time you get a win, it is a great result,” said Canisius head coach Jim Hesch. “Today's game capped off a great weekend. The two teams we played (Duquesne and Western Michigan) are similar to our conference opponents, so it is a great step and great momentum builder going into MAAC play.”
The Griffs tallied the first goal of the afternoon when senior Eddie Powell connected for his third score of the season. Junior Victor Gonzalez found Powell on a free kick and the senior headed the ball in at the 29:12 mark.
Canisius' lead would stand until just under five minutes remaining in the game. The Broncos (2-9-1) knotted the game when Dan Lewis found a loose ball in the box and beat the Canisius goalie to the left.
After a scoreless first overtime, Western Michigan was whistled for a foul right outside its box early in the second extra session. Junior Alan McGreal directed the ball toward Brody, who headed it in for his second tally of the year and first career game-winning goal.
The Griffs controlled possession throughout the game, holding a 20-17 advantage in shots and a 12-3 edge in shots on goal. Freshman goaltender Luke Seymour recorded two saves in net for the Griffs.
The Griffs open MAAC play next weekend with a Friday contest against Rider. Canisius welcomes the Broncs to the Demske Sports Complex for a 7 p.m. contest.
Game Notes: The Griffs' four non-conference victories are the most since the 1995 season when Canisius also won four games out of conference ... McGreal moved into a tie for third in school history with 21 career assists, matching the mark of Gianfranco Gallo (1986-89) ... The Griffs won for the second time six all-time meetings with the Broncos.
