Cleveland State sophomore George Kephart redirected a bouncing free kick into the Canisius goal in the game's 78th minute to help propel the visiting Vikings to a 1-0 win over the Golden Griffins Sunday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex. The win snapped Cleveland State's four-game losing streak and improved the team to 3-5-1 overall, while Canisius slipped to 1-7-0 with the loss.

Following a Canisius foul, Cleveland State sophomore Mitch Boyer set up a free kick from 40 yards out. Boyer's kick bounced off the turf, where Kephart was able to jump up and head the ball off the crossbar and into the net behind Canisius goalkeeper Adam Catley (pictured). In the final 10 minutes of regulation, the Griffs had a few chances to score but the team was unable to get a quality shot on goal down the stretch, as Cleveland State freshman keeper Nick Harpel posted his third shutout of the year. Catley was credited with six saves in the loss as Cleveland State outshot Canisius 12-6.

The Griffs held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks in the loss, while senior forward Simba Aberdeen recorded a team-high two shots. Kephart had three shots for the Vikings, with teammates Jeff Baker and Tom Sadd posting two shots apiece.

Canisius will return to action Saturday, Oct. 6, when the team opens conference play at long-time rival Niagara. Game time in Lewiston, N.Y., is set for 2 p.m.

Game Notes: Sunday's game was Canisius' first home game in 28 days ? the Griffs played five straight away from home since the home opener Sept. 2, against Robert Morris... Cleveland State now holds a 4-0-1 advantage in the all-time series between the two schools... Canisius goalkeeper Adam Catley's 53 saves this year ranks him 11th all-time in school history for career stops.
