Volleyball Loses in Four at Iona

Box Score

Kendall Paulus and Sarah Wiener each had 13 kills for Iona as the Canisius College volleyball team lost 30-25, 30-25, 28-30, 30-26 on Sunday afternoon.

For the second consecutive Sunday, Jess Stackhouse (Warsaw, N.Y.) set the school record for digs in a four-game match by totaling 41 against the Gaels (6-9, 4-0). The 41 digs were also a career high for the Griffs' senior.

Michella Domo (Vancouver, B.C.) led the Golden Griffins (3-12, 1-3 MAAC) with 11 kills while Michelle Godfrey (North Tonawanda, Ohio) had 10 kills to go with a team-best .208 attack percentage.

Iona took the lead midway through the first game and was ahead 18-12 before Canisius won six straight points to tie the game. The Gaels came out of the timeout and won six of the next seven points to regain control and take the game. Iona followed the same formula in game two by taking the lead midway through the second game, but this time didn't let Canisius back into the game to take a 2-0 lead.

The Gaels once again went up early in game three, holding a 9-3 lead. The Griffs rallied to tie it at 15-15, and the teams stayed close the rest of the way until the Griffs won four of the last six points of the game to force a fourth game.

The teams stayed close throughout most of game four before the Gaels went on 6-2 run to turn a 19-18 lead into a 26-20 advantage. The Griffs closed the gap to 27-25 but couldn't come all the way back.

“Today was another disappointing loss,” Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. “We need to minimize the errors on our side of the net to turn these close losses into wins.”

Canisius returns home for two matches next weekend at the Koessler Athletic Center. The Griffs host Manhattan on Saturday, and Saint Peter's next Sunday. Match time on each day is set for 2 p.m.

Match Notes:
Stackhouse is averaging 7.45 digs during the last 11 games... The eight block assists for Domo were a career high... Morgan Ammons (Findlay, Ohio) had 11 digs, which were the most by the junior since she had 15 against Buffalo on Sept. 12, 2006... Canisius dropped both matches in a conference weekend for the first time since Oct. 29-30, 2005.
