Women Place 11th, Men 13th at National Catholic Meet

The Canisius College women's cross country team placed 11th, while the men's team earned a 13th place finish Friday afternoon at the 28th Annual National Catholic Championships in South Bend, Ind. Sophomore Matt Butters placed 14th overall with his career-best time of 25:44, while junior Alex Brown crossed the line 33rd overall in the women's event with her career-best time of 19:12.

The host Notre Dame Fighting Irish won both the men's and women's team titles on their home course, giving the Irish men's team 19 crowns in 28 years, with the women's team earning its 14th championship in the last 16 years.

Vasilis Kariolis placed 82nd in the men's race after crossing the line in 27:30, which was seven seconds ahead of teammate Chris Castelmen (right) and his time of 27:37, good for an 87th place finish.

In the women's race, sophomore Samantha Garnet recorded her first sub-20 minute time of 19:22, and crossed the line in 44th place overall. Freshman Maura Frauenhofer finished in 58th place with her personal best time of 19:35.

Both teams will return to action Sept. 22, when the Blue and Gold serves as the host of the Little Three Championships at Cazenovia Golf Course in Buffalo.
