Volleyball Loses to Binghamton in Home Opener

Box Score

Binghamton had six different players record at least six kills en route to defeating the Canisius College volleyball team 30-13, 30-24, 28-30, 30-20 in the opening game of the Western New York Invitational in the Koessler Athletic Center.

The Griffs had 10 or more kills from three players, led by Michella Domo (Vancouver, B.C.) who had 17 kills on 34 attacks to go along with three errors, good for a .412 hitting percentage. Renee Lettow (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) had 16 kills while Morgan Ammons (Findlay, Ohio) recorded 10 kills for Canisius (0-4).

The Bearcats (2-2) had all six of their hitters who had double-digit attack attempts record a hitting percentage above .150. Jacki Kane led Binghamton with 11 kills and a .385 hitting percentage while Ashley Allen had 10 kills as the Bearcats hit .255 as a team.

Binghamton took control of the first game by using a 14-2 run to go up 23-9. In the second game, the Bearcats used another early-game run to take a 16-8 lead and not let the Griffs get closer than three points.

Canisius won its first game of the season in game three, grabbing the lead at 25-24 and not relinquishing it. In the fourth game, Binghamton once again used an early-game run, turning a 9-6 lead into a 20-9 advantage.

“It's disappointing to lose at home, especially in the opener,” Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. “We are young, but we need to grow through our experiences and become more disciplined and mature on the court, regardless of class year.”

Canisius hosts two games in the Western New York Invitational on Saturday. The Griffs play St. Francis (N.Y.) at 12:30 p.m., and play Fordham at 7 p.m.

Match Notes:
Jess Stackhouse (Warsaw, N.Y.) had a match-high 28 digs and is now 18 away from the all-time school record... The Bearcats had 12 blocks, compared to four for the Griffs... The 43 attempts by Lettow were the most by a Canisius player since Aislinn Hayes had 46 against Manhattan Nov. 18. The Griffs had three players with at least 34 attack attempts since Nov. 5, against Siena.
