Lazare Adingono, an assistant coach with the Canisius men's basketball team and head coach of the Cameroon National Basketball Team, has coached his home country to the gold medal game of the 2007 FIBA Africa Championships after Cameroon dropped Egypt 58-52 Thursday afternoon. The win allows Cameroon to advance to the gold medal game for the first time in the event's history and ensures the country will win its first medal since the multi-national tournament started in 1962.
Cameroon will meet host nation Angola Saturday, Aug. 25, for the right to represent all of Africa at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing. Angola defeated Cape Verde 93-60 on Thursday to advance, and has won four straight and eight of the last nine FIBA Africa Championships since 1989.
"I am very excited to be part of such a tremendous tournament, first as a player and now as the head coach for this very dedicated team," Adingono said. "As a nation, we have a unique opportunity to qualify for the upcoming Olympics games. Working under coach [Tom] Parrotta's direction at Canisius has prepared me to take on this challenge and I can't thank him enough for all he has taught me to this point."
Adingono's team is currently 5-0 after sweeping round-robin play in Group D and posting wins in the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds. This marks the second time Cameroon has advanced to the medal round of FIBA Africa Championship Tournament. The 1974 team lost to Tunisia in the bronze medal game.
