MacKenzie Pitches Baseball Griffs to Split With Rider


Sophomore Alex MacKenzie threw a complete game, allowing three hits and one run, as the Canisius College baseball team earned a 3-1 victory in the nightcap of a MAAC doubleheader at Rider Saturday afternoon. The Griffs fell 8-5 in the first contest.

It was the first complete game of MacKenzie's (right) career. Sophomore Kevin Mahoney drew a bases-loaded walk in the first inning, and Kevin Reimer plated Ian Choy with a sacrifice fly as Canisius (7-25, 2-8 MAAC) took a 2-0 lead.

Connor Burke singled and scored on Branson Joseph's triple in the fifth inning for the Griffs' final run. Rider (10-17, 6-5 MAAC) broke up MacKenzie's shutout bid in the sixth with a two-out, RBI double.

Reimer singled in Mahoney as Canisius had a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one, but two Canisius errors led to five unearned runs for the Broncs in the fourth inning.

Trailing 6-3, the Griffs scored two runs in the top of the eighth. Brian Gibbs led off with a triple and scored on a single by Ryan Asis. A Joseph double plated Alec Cabello, but it was all the Griffs could get as a double play with the bases loaded ended the inning.

Rider came back with two runs in the home half of the inning to regain an 8-5 cushion. The Griffs had two runners on with one out in the ninth inning, but another double play ended the comeback bid.

The teams meet in the series finale tomorrow at noon.
