Women's Basketball Canisius College Athletics

Saint Louis Defeats Women's Basketball

Box Score

ST. LOUIS, Mo. ? Theresa Lisch led Saint Louis with 18 points, 10 from the free-throw line, as the Billikens defeated the Canisius College women's basketball team 67-55 on Wednesday night in the Bauman-Eberhardt Center.

Brittan? Russell led Canisius (4-6) with a career-high 24 points in the game before fouling out with 1:58 remaining in the game. The sophomore also pulled down five rebounds to go along with five steals, the seventh time this season Russell has had at least three steals in the game.

Ellie Radke had 12 points and seven rebounds in 24 minutes off the bench as the sophomore is averaging 12.7 points and 7.0 rebounds in the last three games. Radke went 6-of-6 from the free throw line, as the Griffs went 17-of-21 as a team. In the last four games, Canisius is shooting 83.5 percent (66-of-79) on free throws.

“We dug ourselves a hole early and had to fight out of it. Once we tied the game, some of our lapses from the start returned,” Canisius coach Terry Zeh said. “With our foul trouble in the second half, it was difficult to make another sustained run against an athletic Saint Louis team.”

The Billikens (4-7) came out firing and opened a 12-2 lead three minutes into the game. Out of a timeout, the Griffs responded with a 12-5 run to cut the deficit to three points at 17-14 with 10:02 left in the half. Canisius eventually tied the game at 25-25 on a basket by Russell with 5:56 left. During that 11-minute stretch, the Billikens connected on three field goals, including a drought of 8:30. Saint Louis then scored 10 of the final 13 points in the half to hold a seven-point lead at halftime.

In the second half, Canisius got as close as four on a layup by Amanda Cavo that made the score 41-37 with 15:46 remaining. The Billikens pulled away a few minutes later, scoring 10 consecutive points to turn a 46-41 game into a 56-41 advantage.
Maggie Hennegan had 12 points while Hayley Leake had 10 for Saint Louis, who went 24-of-34 from the free-throw line and shot 40 percent from the field as a team.

Canisius continues its two-game road trip in Missouri with a game against Missouri State on Friday. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. Central.
