St. Bonaventure Holds Off Women's Basketball

Box Score

Katelyn Murray led all players with 22 points as St. Bonaventure defeated the Canisius College women's basketball team 72-65 in the Koessler Athletic Center Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore Ellie Radke led Canisius (4-5) with a career-high 18 points along with eight rebounds, in a career-high 24 minutes off the bench. JJ Williams had 17 points in 24 minutes while Micayla Drysdale scored 12.

Canisius took its only lead of the second half on a jumper by Radke at the 16:03 mark that made the score 38-37. St. Bonaventure (8-2) responded with a 16-4 run to take a 53-42 lead with 8:32 left in the contest.

The Golden Griffins got as close as five points with 1:19 left on another jumper by Radke, who finished the game 7-for-10 from the floor. After Tiara Johnson split two free throws, the Griffs had a chance to cut the lead even further, but shots by Micayla Drysdale and Amanda Cavo didn't fall. The Bonnies closed out the game by making 6-of-8 free throws in the last minute.

“We dug ourselves a hole early and were trying to climb back the entire game, which takes a lot of energy,” Canisius coach Terry Zeh said. “When we took the lead, they answered. We were able to get defensive stops but then allowed offensive rebounds where St. Bonaventure capitalized.”

The Bonnies opened the game with a 15-6 lead on a 3-pointer by Erica Schiefen at the 12:39 mark of the second half. The Griffs responded with a 10-1 run of their own, tying the game at 16-16 on two free throws by Drysdale. St. Bonaventure never let Canisius take the lead in the first half, but didn't take more than a five-point lead on the Griffs before the half.

Murray led the Bonnies with 22 points, as St. Bonaventure had four players reach double figures. Dana Mitchell had 16 points in 20 minutes while Ashley Edwards had 12 points and nine rebounds.

Canisius hits the road for two games in Missouri next week. The first game is set for Wednesday, when the Golden Griffins play at Saint Louis. Game time is set for 8 p.m.
