Loyola Defeats Women's Basketball

BALTIMORE ? A six-point run late in the second half pushed Loyola past the Canisius College women's basketball team with a 55-53 win over the Golden Griffins Sunday afternoon in Reitz Arena.

After a three-point play by Micayla Drysdale put Canisius (4-4, 1-1 MAAC) ahead 49-47 with 4:49 remaining in the game. Loyola (6-3, 2-0) then scored the next six points to take a 55-51 lead with 15 seconds remaining.

After a jump ball kept the ball with the Griffs, Amanda Cavo was able to draw a foul while shooting a 3-pointer. Cavo made the first two, and the Griffs called timeout to setup the final play. Cavo missed and JJ Williams was able to gather the rebound, but she wasn't able to convert in the final seconds to force overtime,

“To win in league play, a team has to play focused for the entire 40 minutes. Those games don't come down to one play,” Canisius coach Terry Zeh said. “Our team is growing but still needs to learn to execute during the whole game.

Brittan? Russell led Canisius with 16 points, connecting on her first six shots before finishing 6-for-10 overall and 3-of-5 on 3-pointers. Cavo had nine points while Ellie Radke set a career high with eight points while also grabbing six rebounds.

The Griffs led by as many as seven in the first half, going up 23-16 on a jumper by Radke. Loyola then went on an 11-3 run, with Kaitlin Grant scoring six of the points during the spurt.

Loyola had four players in double figures, led by 16 from Candice Walker The Greyhounds were 6-for-15 from behind the arc in a game that featured six ties and nine lead changes.

Canisius returns home to the Koessler Athletic Center Saturday, when the Golden Griffins host St. Bonaventure. Game time is set for 2 p.m.

Game Notes:
Canisius extended its streak of games with a made 3-point field goal to 398 on a make by Cavo... Canisius and Loyola played for the seventh time in the last 22 months as the schools have met in the last two MAAC Tournaments... Six of the last 10 games between the schools have been decided by five points or fewer... Russell had four steals and has at least three in 10 of the last 15 games.
