Box Score

Freshman Michella Domo (Vancouver, B.C.) had 16 kills and zero errors on 23 attack attempts as the Canisius College volleyball team defeated Rider University 30-23, 30-23, 30-25 on Sunday afternoon in Lawrenceville, N.J.

Along with the 16 kills from Domo, Canisius (9-16, 7-7 MAAC) received nine kills from freshman Renee Lettow (Lindenhurst, N.Y.). Fellow freshman Mary Curran (West Islip, N.Y.) had five kills and one error while Nicole Fafard (East Setauket, N.Y.) had six kills. Senior Jess Stackhouse (Warsaw, N.Y.) led all players in the match with 20 digs and tallied the 2,000th career dig of her career late in the match.

It was the same formula in all three games for the Griffs ? break open a close game midway through and close it out at the end. Canisius broke open a 19-19 game with an 8-2 run. A kill by Domo, her fifth of the game, gave the Griffs the early lead. In the second game, the Griffs once again took control during the middle of the game by winning five consecutive points and turning a 17-15 lead into a seven-point advantage. In the third and final game, the Griffs also won five straight points to turn a 15-14 game into a 20-14 contest.

“It's good to get back on track with a road win,” Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. “Now we have to bring this momentum home and carry it over to next weekend.”

Rider (2-22, 0-14) was led by Katelyn Thompson, who had 15 kills while Katrina Stehle totaled 11 kills. The Broncs also had four players with double-digit digs, led by 18 from Lacey Johnson.

Canisius closes out its home schedule next weekend when the Golden Griffins host Siena on Saturday, and Marist next Sunday. The team will honor its two seniors prior to the start of the match against the Red Foxes.
