Cross Country Set to Compete at 2007 MAAC Championships

The Canisius College cross country program is set to compete in the 2007 MAAC Cross Country Championships at Van Cortlant Park in Bronx, N.Y. The Griffs are coming off the Albany Invitational, where six Golden Griffins set career-best marks.

On the men's side the Blue and Gold are led by freshman Erik van Ingen (Killawog, N.Y.), who has been named MAAC Runner of the Week twice this fall. Van Ingen's time of 25:28 was the best time since 2000 for a Canisius runner. Van Ingen bested that mark the next week at the Albany Invite with an 8K time of 25:21 to finish ninth of 228 runners. Van Ingen has finished in the top 10 in all three of his collegiate starts. Sophomore Matt Butters (St. Catherine's Ont.) is also having a strong fall. Butters recorded his career-best time of 25:36 at the Albany Invitational.

The women's team is led by sophomore Alex Brown (Lancaster, N.Y.). At the Albany Invitational, Brown finished 34th and recorded a career-best time of 18:39 in the 5K race. Four other Golden Griffins eclipsed their career marks; Samantha Garnet (Monroe, N.Y.) (18:58), Maura Frauenhofer (Williamsville, N.Y.) (19:08), Precious Peoples (Buffalo, N.Y.) (19:31) and Jess Nowak (Orchard Park, N.Y.) (20:05).

At the 2006 MAAC Championship the men's team finished seventh overall, the Griffs' highest finish since 2002. The women's team finished ninth overall. The women's 6K race begins at 1 p.m. with the men's 8K race to follow at 1:45 p.m.
