Cross Country Finishes Strong at Disney Classic

The Canisius College men and women's cross country teams placed seventh and 11th, respectively at the Disney Cross Country Classic Saturday in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. Central Florida won the men's event with 60 team points, while Brigham Young took top honors in the women's race with 35 team points.

Canisius freshman Matt Butters was the Golden Griffins' top individual runner on the male side, posting a 22nd place finish with his time of 26:17. Brett Finnan placed 44th overall with his time of 26:51, just ahead of junior teammate Christian Volk, who crossed the line in 26:52 to place 45th overall. Five of the team's seven runners placed in the top-60 overall in an event that featured 239 participants. The men's team scored 203 team points.

In the women's race, sophomore Precious Peoples finished the course in 19:43 to place 38th overall. Teammate Chelsea Fitzgerald (right) placed 88th overall with her time of 20:37, with freshman Jess Nowak crossing the line in 20:46, good enough to earn a 93rd place finish. The Canisius women scored 376 team points.

Both teams will return to action Oct. 14, at the Little Three Championships. This year's event is being held in Olean. N.Y., and is set to begin at 11 a.m.
