Hobart Defeats Men's Lacrosse 12-6

GENEVA, N.Y. ? Hobart College's Daryl Veltman scored three goals and added three assists to lead the host Statesmen to a 12-6 victory over Canisius College in non-conference lacrosse action at Boswell Field. The Griffs fall to 5-6 overall, while Hobart improves to 7-5.

Hobart was first to get on the board with a goal by Nate Molinari 2:20 into the game. Daryl Veltman found Molinari from the right side, who beat Canisius sophomore goalie Angus Dineley for his 10th goal of the season. Freshman Reed Peterson knotted the game at 1-1 with a man-up goal with 1:51 remaining in the quarter on a feed from junior Dan Carey, but the Statesmen would take the lead back just 21 seconds later on a marker by Chris David. Dineley kept Hobart at bay for most of the opening 15 minutes, posting seven first-quarter saves.

Hobart scored the first three goals in the first half of the second quarter to pull away from the Griffs. The Statesmen increased their lead to 3-1 with 10:53 remaining in the second quarter on a goal by Mike Conklin. Veltman hit Conklin with a pass from behind the net and Conklin beat Dineley to the top right corner for the two-goal margin. A goal by Patrick Meade off a pass from Conklin 42 seconds later and James Dussich tallied his first goal of the season with 7:57 left off a feed from the left side by Nick Currie to make the score 5-1. Carey scored the Griffs' second man-up goal of the game 35 seconds later to cut the deficit to 5-2, but Hobart would restore the four-goal margin with a goal by Chris Scanlon at the 9:27 mark of the quarter. A giveaway in the defensive zone by Curt Jones led to a goal by Veltman, Hobart's leading scorer, with 2:34 left in the quarter and Nick Wilbur found the back of the net just over a minute later to extend the Hobart lead to 8-2 at the halftime break.

Two quick goals by Veltman broke the game open for the Statesmen. The freshman netted his second of the game 12:16 into the third quarter off a pass by Meade, giving the Statesmen a 9-2 lead and he tallied a man-up goal with 9:56 remaining for his 25th marker of the season. The Canisius man-up unit produced again, as freshman Michael Blocho scored with 5:24 remaining to cut the Hobart lead to 10-3. Rory Melvin restored the eight-goal advantage 25 seconds later with a goal from 10 feet out, beating Tom Kucharczak, who replaced Dineley earlier in the quarter. Kevin Ross scored Canisius' fourth man-up goal of the game at the 11:46 mark of the quarter on a feed by Brad Favero, beating Hobart goalie Dan Valente to the top left corner.

Meade notched his second goal of the game 2:06 into the fourth quarter, increasing Hobart's lead to 12-4. Veltman picked up his third assist of the game on the goal. Stephen Ola scored his eighth goal of the season with 9:51 remaining off a pass from behind the net by Ross. Ola ripped a low shot from fifteen feet, beating Mike DeSantis to the lower right corner. Reed Peterson made it 12-6 with 3:26 left on the clock off a cross-field pass by Tom Hensel.

Dineley was replaced by Kucharczak with 8:08 left in the third quarter. Dineley posted 19 saves and allowed 10 goals in over 36 minutes of action. Kucharczak finished the game with eight saves. Valente recorded 11 saves in 45 minutes of action fro Hobart, allowing four goals. DeSantis allowed two fourth-quarter goals. Hobart out-shot the Griffs 62-28 and posted a 58-43 advantage in ground balls.
Canisius returns to action on the road Saturday afternoon in the regular season finale against Providence College at 2 p.m.
