Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men’s Lacrosse Defeated by Siena Saturday

Siena scored the final five goals of the game to pull away from Canisius and secure a 13-5 victory in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's lacrosse action Saturday at Hickey Field in Loudonville, N.Y.

Travis Fry scored two goals and added three assists to lead the Saints (8-2, 4-0 MAAC) attack. Patrick Linton and Caden Olmstead chipped in four points each on identical score lines of three goals and an assist. Logan Banek went 15-of-19 at the faceoff "X" and added a game-best nine ground balls while Vito DeBellis made 13 saves between the pipes for the home team.

Sophomore Peter Biglin and freshman Mike Belles tallied two goals each for the Golden Griffins (3-7, 2-2 MAAC). Redshirt freshman Sam Kosloski finished with 10 saves in goal for Canisius.

Siena never trailed in the contest, jumping out to a 4-0 lead as it used individual tallies from Linton and Colby LeBlanc to get on the board before a pair of goals from Olmstead capped the opening spurt.

Belles counted the Saints run, scoring two of the next three goals to trim the Canisius deficit to 5-2 with less than five minutes to play until halftime.

Conor Hufnagel restored momentum in Siena's favor moments later, tallying the final goal of the first half to spark a three-goal spurt that lasted into the third quarter and gave the Saints an 8-2 edge with 9:15 to play in the third.

Canisius battled back into the contest, using a man-up tally from redshirt sophomore Jordan Meech and a pair of tallies from Biglin to make it a three-goal game heading into the fourth.

That would be as close as the Griffs would get, however, as the Saints scored all five goals tallied in the fourth quarter to secure the win. Fry notched a pair of tallies and added an assist during the fourth quarter run while the Siena defense kept Canisius off the scoreboard as they forced the Griffs into seven turnovers.

POSTGAME COMMENTS
"Disappointed that we didn't make the most of the opportunity to be able to get another conference win. We just made too many mistakes that we could not overcome. We needed some great plays throughout, but we just could not convert them on the other end of the field. Unfortunately, what's holding us back at times is ourselves.

"Today was a much better effort from us in terms of how we played during the game; effort wise and attitude wise. Now we've got to be able to play with the poise and confidence of being able to execute all our systems in all regions of the field. That's the big difference now is cleaning up that stuff and playing with the effort and the intensity that we did today.

"We're getting great looks on the offensive end. We got to be able to shoot the ball. Unfortunately, we're not following through and shooting the ball with the intensity and vigor that we need to be able to put it by a goalie consistently and that's something that we continue to work on. We talk about every day. We've got to be better on that end because we got great looks here in the first quarter and had nothing to show for it. We got to come away with something in that quarter."

GAME NOTES
• Siena outshot Canisius by a 42-32 margin for the contest, highlighted by a 39-20 margin over the final three quarters.
• The Saints were 1-for-1 in man-up situations while the Griffs were 1-for-2 with the extra attacker.

• Kosloski notched double-digit saves for the second time this season with his 10-save effort on Saturday.
