ESPNU to Broadcast Two Canisius College Home Games

The Canisius College men and women's basketball teams will make a combined four appearances on television this season, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference office announced today. Three contests will be broadcast live on ESPNU, two of which will be from the Koessler Athletic Center.

The Golden Griffins will host Niagara in a men and women's doubleheader at the Koessler Center Tuesday, Jan. 17, and both games will be carried live on ESPNU. The women are set to tipoff at 4:30 p.m. in a rematch of last season's MAAC Tournament semifinal, which the Golden Griffins won en route to their MAAC Championship.

“We're thrilled to have a regular-season game on national television, and the fact that it's a home game makes it more special,” said women's coach Terry Zeh. “Last season's semifinal game against Niagara was one of the most exciting games I've been a part of. It will be great to showcase this Western New York rivalry on ESPNU.”

The men will tip at 7 p.m., in the 156th meeting between the two schools. Two of the last four meetings in the series have gone to overtime with each team scoring over 100 points.

“Western New York fans know that usually something special happens when Canisius plays Niagara, and it's almost always a great game,” said men's coach Mike MacDonald. “Having the game on ESPNU will just add to the excitement.”

The men's Feb. 24 game at Saint Peter's will also be broadcast on ESPNU with the tipoff scheduled for 7 p.m. The Griffs and Peacocks split last season's games with each team winning at home. The Griffs' home game against Fairfield Jan. 29, will be broadcast on MSG as part of the MAAC Television Package. Two of the last four meetings in that series have gone to overtime, including an 81-80 Stag victory in the Koessler Center last December.

The Canisius men return four starters and eight letterwinners from last season's 11-18 team, which tied for seventh in the league with an 8-10 mark.

The Canisius women return 12 letterwinners and all five starters from last year's squad, which went 21-10 overall, the program's fifth 20-win season all-time and first since 1989-90.
