Stevens Named an Arthur Ashe Sports Scholar for the Second-Straight Year

Canisius College junior basketball player Jenel Stevens (Freeport, N.Y.) has been honored by the Black Issues in Higher Education magazine as a 2003 Arthur Ashe Jr., Sports Scholar. To be eligible for the award, student-athletes must hold a grade point average of at least 3.2 and be active on campus or in the community.

Stevens finished the 2002-03 season as the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference's leading scorer, posting 20.5 points per game as the Golden Griffins finished the season 16-14 overall and 9-9 in conference play, the program's first winning season since 1994-95. Stevens was named First Team All-MAAC and became just the second Canisius women's player to be named to the conference's All-Tournament team after leading the Griffs to the semifinal round in March.

Stevens, a business management major, was named to the conference's all-academic team for the second-straight year and was voted as the Griffs' Most Valuable Player by her teammates and coaches. The 5-foot-9 guard served as a team captain this past season and also serves as the vice president for Canisius College's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

This is the second year in a row that Stevens has been honored as an Arthur Ashe Jr., Sports Scholar. She was the only basketball player from a MAAC school to receive this honor.
