Women's Basketball Canisius College Athletics

Stevens and Wittlieb Honored by the MAAC

Canisius College junior Jenel Stevens and freshman Cheri Wittlieb were honored by the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference on Monday afternoon for their efforts in helping lead the women's basketball team to a 2-0 start and the championship of the Eastern Michigan/Eagle Classic Nov. 22-23, in Ypsilanti, Mich.

Stevens was named the conference's Player of the Week after averaging 27 points, 8.5 rebounds and five steals en route to being named the Eagle Classic's MVP. Stevens tied a career-high with 29 points after shooting 11-for-12 from the field in the Golden Griffins' 104-68 win over Stetson Nov. 22. She also tied a school record, going a perfect 7-for-7 from behind the three-point arc in the win over the Hatters. Stevens was credited with her fifth career double-double in the 76-70 win over Eastern Michigan Nov. 23, in the championship contest, posting a game-high 25 points and 10 rebounds.

Wittlieb was named to the 2002 Eagle Classic All-Tournament team after dropping 18 points on Stetson in the season opener and nine points against Eastern Michigan in the tournament's championship game. Wittlieb came off the bench in the first half against Eastern Michigan and helped the Golden Griffins go on 20-2 run with three, three-point field goals in 5:57, including a pair of three-point bombs on back-to-back Canisius possessions. Wittlieb, who is not a scholarship player for the Griffs, shot 38.9 percent from behind the three-point line and is currently averaging 13.5 points per contest through the team's first two games this season.

Canisius is 2-0 for the first time since 1989-90, which is also the last time the program finished with 20 wins. The Griffs are set to play Bucknell Nov. 27, in the first game of a three-game road stretch over the next five days.
