Canisius Men's Basketball Announces 2002-03 Schedule

Canisius College Director of Athletics Timothy J. Dillon and men's basketball coach Mike MacDonald announced the 2002-03 Golden Griffin men's basketball schedule today. This is the 99th season of Canisius basketball.

For the first time ever in the same season, the Griffs will host local rivals Buffalo (Dec. 14, 4 p.m.), St. Bonaventure (Dec. 19, 7 p.m.) and Niagara (Feb. 12, 8 p.m.) in the renovated Koessler Athletic Center.

The Blue and Gold plays nine non-conference contests, including five at home. The home slate features games against Bethune-Cookman (Nov. 23, 3 p.m.), when Canisius will rededicate the Koessler Athletic Center, St. Joseph's (Nov. 26, 7 p.m.) and Morgan State (Dec. 17, noon) in addition to Buffalo and St. Bonaventure. The Griffs will travel to Bucknell (Dec. 3, 7:30 p.m.), Notre Dame (Dec. 22, 2 p.m.), Syracuse (Dec. 30, 7 p.m.) and Florida International (Jan. 2, 7:30 p.m.).

Two televised games highlight the conference schedule and will be shown on the Empire Sports Network and MSG as part of the MAAC television package. The Griffs' game against Saint Peter's in Albany (Jan. 20, 5 p.m.) and the home contest versus Manhattan (Feb 2, 4 p.m.) will be televised.

The Griffs play their first four conference games away from home, beginning with a showdown at Niagara Nov. 30 at 4 p.m. Canisius also meets Siena, Iona and Marist on the road before hosting its first conference home game against Fairfield Jan. 14 at 7 p.m.

“We're really excited about the renovations to the KAC and pleased to be hosting our traditional rivals Buffalo, St. Bonaventure and Niagara there,” said coach Mike MacDonald. “We're hoping that the renovated facility and our play on the court will generate some excitement and give us a good home court advantage all year.”

Season ticket packages for Canisius basketball are currently on sale. Fans can get a reserved, chair-back seat for all men's and women's home games for $125. Select-A-Seat Day will take place Saturday, Oct. 19, from 2-5 p.m. On that afternoon, fans will have the opportunity to select their season ticket seats for the upcoming basketball campaign. Call 716-888-2977 for more information.

The Canisius men finished the 2001-02 season with a 10-20 record but advanced to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals for the seventh time in the last 10 years by knocking off top-seeded Rider 85-84 in overtime. The Griffs return four starters and nine letter winners from last year's team. MacDonald is entering his sixth season as the head coach of Canisius.
