Three Fairfield players were credited with double-digit kills, led by Aislin Oldach's match-high 13, as the visiting Stags posted a 3-1 win over Canisius in Metro Conference volleyball action Saturday afternoon at the Koessler Athletic Center.
Fairfield setter Zofia Sykut added 39 assists, seven digs, three aces and a pair of kills as the Stags won the match by set scores of 25-10, 22-25, 25-19, 25-12. Fairfield moved to 8-5 overall and 2-0 in Metro Conference play with the victory, while the Golden Griffins fell to 1-11 overall and 0-2 in conference matches.
For Canisius, junior Emma Isroff led the Griffs with eight kills to go with four digs and four block assists, while redshirt-junior Julia Lenik added seven kills and nine digs. Sophomore setter Anna Rich was credited 16 assists, while senior libero Brenda Reynaga posted 13 digs.
As a team, Fairfield hit .542 through the first set of play, outscoring Canisius by 15 points, en route to a 25-10 set victory to take an early 1-0 lead in the match. Fairfield's Emma Bortolotti put down five kills and recorded three digs in the opening frame.
Canisius fought back with a 25-22 victory in the second set, thanks to strong performances from Lenik and seniors Azoria Davis and Hannah Kos. All three players had three kills in the set, while Kos added a pair of service aces.Â
Out of the intermission, Fairfield jumped out to an early 4-0 lead and never looked back en route to the 25-19 set victory. Oldach had five of her 13 kills in that frame, and her lone service ace of the day pushed the Stags to set point. In the fourth set, Fairfield hit .591 as a team, while holding the Griffs to a -.036 team hitting percentage to seal the win.
GAME NOTES
• Saturday was the 60th all-time meeting between Canisius and Fairfield in volleyball.
• Saturday's match featured just five ties, and there were no lead changes during the sets.
• Freshman Emily Helmers led the Griffs with three service aces.
• Helmers and Isroff combined for eight of the Griffs' 14 block assists in the match.
• During the intermission, Canisius recognized former Griff Allyson (Severyn) Knapp, who became the eighth former volleyball player in program history to be inducted into the Canisius Sports Hall of Fame on Friday night.

Canisius will start a stretch where the team plays five-straight Metro matches on the road on Sept. 29, when the Griffs travel to play longtime rival Niagara at the Gallagher Center in Lewiston, N.Y. The contest will start at 6 p.m., and will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
