Silliman’s Walk-Off Home Run Lifts Baseball Past Sacred Heart

Senior Owen Silliman launched a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth to break a 3-3 tie and lift Canisius to a 5-3 victory over Sacred Heart in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference baseball action Saturday at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

The Golden Griffins secured their sixth series win of the season with Saturday's victory as they improved to 18-24 overall and 14-12 in the MAAC. Sacred Heart dropped to 15-30 overall with an 11-14 conference record.

Silliman posted a 2-for-4 performance at the plate, ending the game in dramatic fashion with his long ball to center. Redshirt freshman Bennett Cox and junior Eric Weeks each tallied multiple hits, while Weeks delivered two RBI on his double in the first. On the mound, sophomore Noah Albano recorded the win in relief, tossing 2.1 innings, retiring all seven batters faced.

Sacred Heart totaled six hits in the contest, with Ronan Donohue, Will Rudolph, and Nathan Bowes each collecting two hits. Jase Schueller was charged with his first loss of the season after allowing the walk-off home run to Silliman.

The Griffs struck in the first, loading the bases as the first three batters reached before redshirt junior Thomas Zwirecki brought home a run on a fielder's choice. Weeks notched the final two runs of the frame as he laced a two-run double to center to give Canisius an early 3-0 lead.

Sacred Heart responded in the top half of the second as Bowes recorded an RBI double to center, cutting the lead to 3-1.

The Pioneers struck again in the fourth when Rudolph launched a solo homer to center, making it a 3-2 ballgame.

Sacred Heart tied the game in the sixth after delivering back-to-back singles before Jacob Schmutz brought home the tying run on a sacrifice fly.

The game remained tied at three entering the ninth as Albano retired the side in order. In the bottom of the frame, freshman Blake Herman was hit by a pitch before Silliman blasted a two-run homer to center, lifting the Griffs to the series-clinching win.
