Sacred Heart Takes Series Finale Over Baseball

Ronan Donahue went 2-for-4 with two home runs to power Sacred Heart to a 10-5 victory over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference baseball action Sunday at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.
 
With the series finale win, the Pioneers improved to 16-30 overall with a 12-14 mark in the MAAC. The Golden Griffins dropped to 18-25 overall and 14-13 in conference play with Sunday's setback.
 
Donohue drove in three runs with his two blasts to highlight a Sacred Heart lineup that mashed four long balls in the contest. Will Cook added a three-run shot in the fourth, while CJ Nolan connected on a two-run homer in the eighth. On the mound, Anakin Underhill earned his first win after tossing two innings and allowing one unearned run.
 
Senior Owen Silliman followed up his walk-off performance on Saturday by going 2-for-3 with a two-run homer in the ninth. Redshirt sophomore Justin Bremner accounted for the other home run for the Griffs with a solo shot to left. Sophomore Brian Smith took the loss after allowing three runs over 3.1 innings.

Sacred Heart grabbed the lead in the first as Nolan drove in the game's opening run with a sacrifice fly to center.
 
The Griffs answered in the second, loading the bases before Silliman lifted a sacrifice fly to right to even the score. Canisius then moved ahead in the third with a two-out rally, highlighted by an RBI single from redshirt junior Thomas Zwirecki, to take a 2-1 lead.
 
The Pioneers answered back in the fourth as Daniel Rice III and Chris Wilson reached on consecutive singles before Cook launched a three-run homer to right to pull back in front, 4-2.
 
Sacred Heart extended its lead in the fifth when Donohue crushed the second pitch of his at-bat over the left field wall for a two-run shot. In the bottom half of the frame, junior Eric Weeks drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to trim the deficit to 6-3.
 
The Pioneers added another run in the seventh as Kyle Cincinnati singled to center to score Donohue from second. Sacred Heart then broke the game open in the eighth when Nolan delivered a two-run homer before Donohue followed with a solo shot, his second homer of the afternoon, to make it 10-3.

Canisius attempted a late rally in the ninth as Silliman and Bremner hit back-to-back home runs, but the Pioneers turned a double play to close out the 10-5 victory.
 
GAME NOTES
• With Sunday's loss, Canisius and Sacred Heart are all knotted up at 3-3 in the all-time series.
• Redshirt freshman Bennett Cox extended his hit streak to six games on Sunday, finishing the series with five hits and four runs scored. Cox now leads the MAAC with his .378 batting average.
• With his solo shot in the ninth, Silliman now has a team-leading seven homers on the season. The senior drove in five runs on five hits in the weekend series.
• Making an appearance in right field late in the game, Bremner delivered a solo homer in the ninth, marking his second of the year.
• With his RBI single in the third, Zwirecki extended his RBI streak to six games. The East Amherst, N.Y. native now has nine RBI over his last six games.
• Over the three-game series, Canisius narrowly outhit Sacred Heart, 26-25.

UP NEXT
Canisius hosts Siena in a MAAC series to close out the regular season. The series opener between the Griffs and Saints is slated for 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Demske Sports Complex.
