Baseball Secures Series Versus Siena with Thursday Victory

Senior Owen Silliman went 2-for-3 at the plate with five RBI as Canisius secured the series victory over Siena, 13-6, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference baseball action Thursday at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

With the series-clinching win, the Golden Griffins improved to 20-25 overall and 16-13 in the MAAC as they remained in the hunt for a spot in next week's MAAC Baseball Championship. The Saints fell to 20-29 overall and 12-17 in conference play with the loss.

Silliman hit his team-leading eighth home run of the season to highlight his five-RBI performance and pace a Canisius lineup that finished with 10 hits in the contest. Freshman Blake Herman drove in four runs as he launched a three-run homer, his fifth of the season. On the mound, junior Joe LoPinto earned the win, tossing a career-high seven innings while also setting a new personal best with nine strikeouts.

Siena tallied just five hits in the contest, and Richie Paltridge registered the only multi-RBI performance for the Saints at the plate with his ninth-inning double that brought home a pair. Marcus Botelho was credited with the loss on the mound after four innings, allowing five runs.

Canisius opened the scoring for the second consecutive contest in the fourth inning as Herman launched his fifth homer of the season, a three-run shot. Just two batters later, Silliman blasted the first pitch he saw to center for a two-run blast to put the Griffs up, 5-0.

Siena responded in the next frame with a two-out rally as Steven Ramirez kept the inning alive with a double to center before scoring on a wild pitch, trimming the Canisius advantage to 5-1.

Canisius answered back in the home half of the fifth, erupting for four runs on four hits. Redshirt junior Thomas Zwirecki got the rally started with a two-run single to center. Silliman capped the scoring in the frame with a two-run double to deep center, extending the lead to eight runs.

The Saints chipped at the deficit in the seventh, plating two runs. Scott Lynch delivered a one-out double and later scored on an error for the first run of the frame while Edwin Sanchez followed with an RBI groundout, cutting the Griffs' lead to 9-3. Canisius got a run back in the bottom half of the frame as Herman was hit by a pitch and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Silliman, restoring a seven-run advantage.

The Saints and Griffs continued to exchange blows in the eighth, as Siena plated one run on a wild pitch. Canisius answered once again in the bottom half of the inning, with redshirt sophomore Justin Bremner reaching on a single and later coming around to score on a wild pitch. With the bases loaded, junior Eric Weeks singled to left to drive in a run, and Herman capped the frame with a sacrifice fly, extending the lead to 13-4.

Siena loaded the bases in the ninth before Paltridge delivered a two-run double to right. Freshman Jackson Long then struck out the final three Siena batters to close out the seven-run win.
