Baseball Powers Past Siena in Game One

Redshirt junior Thomas Zwirecki recorded two doubles and four RBI while senior Felix Morin picked up his 200th career strikeout as Canisius secured the game-one victory over Siena, 15-2, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference baseball action Wednesday at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

The Golden Griffins improved to 19-25 overall and 15-13 in the MAAC with the series-opening win. Siena fell to 20-28 overall and 12-16 in conference play with the setback.

Zwirecki's two doubles highlighted a 4-for-5 day at the plate for the East Amherst native and powered a Canisius lineup that saw junior Eric Weeks go 3-for-5 with four RBI while senior Owen Silliman finished 2-for-3 with three RBI. On the mound, Morin earned the win after tossing five innings, allowing just one earned run while striking out six.

Siena registered six hits in the contest, with three of those coming off the bat of Vincent Venditti, who hit a two-run homer in the fifth. Sam Falace was saddled with the loss, tossing just 1.1 innings, allowing one run while walking three.

The Griffs jumped out to an early lead as Zwirecki launched a double down the left field line in the bottom of the first, scoring redshirt freshman Bennett Cox.

The Blue and Gold carried the momentum into the third as three Griffs were hit by pitches to load the bases before sacrifice fly to right by Silliman and an RBI single from Weeks made it a 3-0 game.

The Canisius offense added to its lead in the fourth as Zwirecki and Weeks hit back-to-back doubles, plating three more runs and putting the Griffs ahead, 6-0.

Siena's only runs of the ballgame came in the fifth inning when Venditti launched a two-run homer to left, cutting the deficit to four.

The Griffs broke the game open in the fifth inning, erupting for seven runs on five hits while batting through the order. Senior Mason Cisco started the scoring in the frame with a bases-loaded walk before Zwirecki lined a two-run single to center. Weeks continued his strong day at the plate with an RBI single to center and Silliman followed with a two-run double to right. Bremner later added an RBI groundout to cap the inning as Canisius stretched its advantage to 13-2.

Canisius plated its final two runs in the sixth as Weeks brought in one run on an RBI single, followed by a sacrifice fly from freshman Blake Herman, extending the Blue and Gold advantage to 13.

The Canisius pitching staff made good use of the run support, holding Siena to just one hit over the final four frames as senior William Enright closing out the game in the ninth by retiring the side to secure the win.
