Baseball Takes Series Over Manhattan With Sunday’s Win

Junior Eric Weeks went 4-for-4 with four RBI, highlighted by a double and a solo home run, to lead Canisius to an 8-5 series-clinching win over Manhattan in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference baseball action Sunday at Clover Stadium in Pomona, N.Y.

The Golden Griffins improved to 14-22 overall with a 10-11 mark in the MAAC with Sunday's win. Manhattan moved to 15-25 overall and 8-16 in conference play with the setback.

Junior JC Spinosa also registered a multi-hit affair in Sunday's win as the shortstop was 2-for-4 at the plate and scored three runs. Sophomore Noah Albano picked up his second straight win, providing 4.2 innings of shutout relief. Senior Felix Morin picked up the first save of his career, retiring the final three Jaspers batters.

Vincent Samuel recorded a three-hit day for Manhattan, going 3-for-5. Trevor Hansen provided two RBI with his two-run single in the first. Trey Packen was credited with the loss after just 1.1 innings of work, allowing four runs.

Canisius opened the scoring in the first inning as redshirt freshman Bennett Cox delivered an RBI single with runners on the corners. Spinosa later crossed the plate on a balk, and Weeks capped the inning with an RBI single to center to give the Griffs a 3-0 lead.

Manhattan answered in the bottom half of the frame, cutting the deficit to one on a two-run single up the middle by Hansen.

The teams traded runs again in the second inning, with Weeks picking up his second RBI of the day on a sacrifice fly. Ryan Lordier responded with a sac fly of his own in the bottom half, making it a 4-3 game.

Canisius extended its lead in the fourth as Spinosa scored on a fielding error. The Griffs added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth, as Weeks launched his fourth home run of the season to push the advantage to 7-3.

Manhattan made things interesting in the eighth, as Justin Best and Colin Basehore hit back-to-back solo home runs to cut the deficit to two. Senior Andrew Marcello scored in the ninth on an error as the Griffs went on to slam the door shut on the Jaspers' offense to secure the 8-5 win.
