Baseball Splits Doubleheader at Manhattan

Redshirt freshman Bennett Cox posted a 6-for-9 performance at the plate to pace Canisius in a split of its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader versus Manhattan Friday at Clover Stadium in Pomona, N.Y.

The Golden Griffins (13-22, 9-11 MAAC) secured a 5-4 win over the Jaspers (15-24, 8-15 MAAC) in the opener before Manhattan rallied with a 7-5 victory in game two to earn the split. 
 
Senior Owen Silliman posted a 3-for-5 performance with two RBI in game one, while senior Andrew Marcello was 2-for-4 with two RBI in game two.
 
GAME ONE RECAP
Senior Felix Morin earned the win on the mound for Canisius in the opener, pitching 6.1 innings and allowing just one run while fanning six. Hudson Pergamit was credited with the loss after 5.1 innings of work, allowing four runs.
 
The Griffs plated the game's first run in the fifth as senior Mason Cisco scored on an error during a base hit by Cox to give Canisius the lead.
 
Marcello extended the Griffs lead in the sixth with an RBI double to left, driving in a run. Later in the inning, Silliman delivered a two-run triple and later scored on an RBI single from redshirt junior Thomas Zwirecki to expand the lead to 5-0.
 
The Jaspers got on the board in the bottom half of the sixth as Best recorded a sacrifice fly to cut the Canisius lead to four.
 
Manhattan continued to chip away at the Canisius lead in the eighth as Trevor Hansen delivered an RBI single, followed by an RBI double from Colin Basehore and an RBI groundout by Jackson Babione to pull the Jaspers within one. Senior Sam Staerker thwarted the comeback attempt in the ninth, striking out two to seal the 5-4 win.
 
GAME TWO RECAP
Jackson Klein registered the win in game two, tossing 5.1 innings and allowing three runs while fanning a season-high eight. Junior Joe LoPinto started on the mound for Canisius in game two and was saddled with the loss to move to 3-5 on the season after surrending six runs and striking out six in 4.2 innings of work.

Justin Best's first-inning homer gave Manhattan an early lead and highlighted a Jaspers' lineup that strung together 12 hits, led by Ryan Lordier, who finished the nightcap by going 3-for-4 at the plate. 
 
Manhattan extended its lead in the fourth, as Andreaus Lewis delivered a two-out RBI single to right to make it a 4-0 contest.
 
Canisius got on the board in the fifth when Cox picked up his fourth hit of the day, an RBI single to make it a 4-1 ballgame.
 
The Jaspers responded in the bottom half of the fifth, as Jackson Brinker brought home one run on a double to left before Guriyandel Salva was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, putting Manhattan up 6-1.
 
The Griffs answered in the following frame as Marcello ripped a two-run triple to center, cutting the deficit to three.
 
Manhattan struck again in the eighth, plating one on an RBI single from Vincent Samuel, making it a 7-3 advantage.
 
Canisius' comeback would fall short in the ninth as junior Eric Weeks blasted a two-run homer to left with two outs, but Manhattan secured the final out without further damage to close out the 7-5 win.
 
GAME NOTES
• Canisius moved to 44-47 in the all-time series between the two programs with the doubleheader split on Friday.
• Morin tallied six strikeouts on the bump in game one. The senior now has a team-leading 51 strikeouts and a 3.13 ERA.
• Coming off a midweek game that saw him hit two long balls and record seven RBI, Weeks blasted his third homer in his last two games. The junior now has five hits and nine RBI over his last three games.
• Cox extended his hit streak to 15 games with his two hits in each game of the doubleheader. 
• Marcello also extended his hitting streak to nine games, tallying three hits during the doubleheader.
• The Canisius pitching staff tallied 20 strikeouts over the two games on Friday, compared to 19 for Manhattan.
• Manhattan left 20 men on base across the two games on Friday, compared to Canisius' 18.

UP NEXT
Canisius and Manhattan are slated to conclude their MAAC series on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m., at Clover Stadium in Pomona, N.Y.
