Hot Bats Power Baseball Past Le Moyne

Junior Eric Weeks and freshman Blake Herman combined for four home runs and 13 RBI to power Canisius to a 24-11 win over Le Moyne in intercollegiate baseball action Tuesday at Dick Rockwell Field in Syracuse, N.Y. 
 
The Golden Griffins improved to 12-21 with the non-conference win, while the Dolphins fell to 12-20 with Tuesday's setback.
 
Herman and Weeks both smacked a pair of home runs, highlighted by a grand slam each, to highlight a Griffs lineup that racked up 18 hits in the rout. Junior JC Spinosa and senior Andrew Marcello also registered two hits and three RBI apiece. Sophomore Brian Smith earned the win for Canisius, coming out of the pen with 1.2 innings of relief work.
 
Jack Cannon was 3-for-4 with five RBI and three runs scored for Le Moyne. Landon Cook was credited with the loss in Tuesday's contest, with one inning of work, allowing seven runs.
 
The Griffs struck in the opening inning with Spinosa delivering a two-run double to right to give Canisius an early lead.
 
The Dolphins answered right back in the bottom half of the frame, evening the score at 2-2 as Paulie Goodness came home on an error before Cooper Romich followed with a sacrifice fly.
 
Canisius jumped back in front in the second, erupting for seven runs with two outs. Junior Eric Weeks sparked the rally with a two-run double, followed by an RBI single from Spinosa. Freshman Blake Herman capped off the inning with a grand slam to center, giving the Griffs a 9-2 lead.
 
Le Moyne notched one run in the bottom half of the second as it loaded the bases before Cannon drove in a run with an RBI single. The Griffs added to their lead in the third, as redshirt freshman Bennett Cox came home on a wild pitch to keep the advantage at seven.
 
The Griffs continued their damage in the fourth, plating six more runs as Herman delivered his second long ball of the day and Weeks recorded the second grand slam of the day to put Canisius ahead by 13.
 
Le Moyne plated four runs in the bottom of the fourth on three hits, highlighted by a two-run homer from Landon Duprey.
 
Canisius continued to swing away in the fifth, plating five more runs as Herman and freshman Rocco Panepinto delivered back-to-back RBI singles. Marcello blasted the Griffs' fourth homer of the day, this time a three-run shot, to extend the lead to 14.
 
The scoring frenzy continued in the bottom half of the fifth as Le Moyne plated four more runs, highlighted by a three-run homer from Jack Cannon to make it 21-11.
 
The Griffs struck again in the sixth as sophomore Brayden Hy launched the fifth Canisius homer with a two-run shot to left. Weeks followed in the seventh with his second home run of the day, this time a solo shot, as Canisius closed out the 24-11 win.
 
GAME NOTES
• Canisius and Le Moyne met for the 113th time in series history, a series that dates back to the 1958 campaign.
• Tuesday's win marks the first time Canisius has put up 20 or more runs in a win since March 26, 2023, when the Griffs took down Mount St. Mary's in a 23-6 victory.
• Cox remained red hot at the plate, extending his hit streak to 13 games. The redshirt freshman also recorded three hits in the win, marking his fourth three-hit game of the season.
• Marcello also extended his hit streak to seven games. The outfielder also drove in a season-high three runs in the win.
• Weeks launched two home runs in Tuesday's win, highlighted by his grand slam in the fourth. The Pittsburgh native marked a career high with his seven RBI in the contest.
• Herman posted career highs in hits (3), RBI (6), and runs scored (3) with his performance at the plate on Tuesday.
• Hy launched his first homer of the year and fourth of his collegiate career in the sixth.
• The Griffs debuted two freshmen in Tuesday's win as Sam McKay and Ryan Pettograsso each made an appearance on the mound.
• Canisius outhit Le Moyne by an 18-10 margin in Tuesday's contest.
 
UP NEXT
Canisius continues its road swing as the team travels to Riverdale, N.Y., to take on Manhattan in a three-game series April 24-26. Game one on Friday is set for noon at Clover Stadium.
