Men’s Lacrosse Opens MAAC Play with Win Versus Iona

Canisius scored the final five goals of the game to break a 5-5 tie and defeat Iona, 10-5, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's lacrosse action Saturday at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo.

Redshirt sophomore Quinn Huber tallied four goals while sophomore Carson Christy notched a goal and three assists for the Golden Griffins (2-4, 1-0 MAAC). Redshirt sophomore Jordan Meech pitched in a goal and an assist while senior Micah Hanson won 13-of-18 draws, scooped up a season-high matching 11 ground balls and pitched in a goal.

Redshirt freshman Sam Kosloski picked up his first career win between the pipes for Canisius as he recorded nine saves.

Cullen Lawry and Luke Neary notched two goals each for the Gaels (0-9, 0-1 MAAC). Jimmy Kennedy dished out two assists while Noah Perea made 15 saves in goal.

With the score tied at 5-5 midway through the third quarter, graduate attackman TJ Buono notched an even-strength tally with 4:50 to play in the frame to put the Griffs back in front.

Christy struck in the final two minutes of the third to give Canisius a two-goal edge heading into the fourth before a man-up goal from freshman Justin Relosky less than three minutes into the final frame stretched the Griffs cushion to 8-5.

Meech and Huber capped the decisive surge, striking a little more than a minute apart from each other midway through the frame to put Canisius up 10-5. The Griffs were able to secure the win, keeping the Gaels off the board over the final 23-plus minutes of the contest to start league play in the win column.

Earlier in the contest, Canisius jumped to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter, using a pair of tallies from Huber and individual strikes from Hanson and Martin to grab the early lead.

Iona answered back in the second quarter, scoring the first three goals of the frame to spark a 5-1 surge that tied the game at 5-5, setting the scent for the Griffs' late-game run.
