Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men’s Lacrosse Falls in Overtime at St. Bonaventure

Blake Maracle scored with 1:40 remaining in overtime to lift St. Bonaventure to an 11-10 victory over Canisius in collegiate men's lacrosse action Tuesday at the Marra Athletics Complex in Olean, N.Y.

Maracle added an assist to his overtime marker to pace a balanced Bonnies (4-4) attack that saw six different players finish with two-or-more points. Cole Kucinski and Jaxon Dillon tallied three points each on identical score lines of two goals and an assist to lead St. Bonaventure while Patrick Shanahan and Chris Lawrence pitched in two goals each. Isaac Farmer recorded 11 saves between the pipes for the Bonnies.

Sophomore Peter Biglin tallied three goals while redshirt sophomore Quinn Huber finished with two tallies for the Golden Griffins (2-5). Senior Dylan Collins and sophomore Hunter Roy chipped in a goal and an assist each while three players added individual tallies. Redshirt senior Mark Matott got the start in goal for Canisius and responded with a career-high 12 saves.

Marakle's game-winning goal capped a frantic finish to the matchup of Little Three rivals as the two sides combined for a total of four ties and two lead changes during the fourth quarter.

Trailing 8-7, Biglin brought Canisius level a little more than two minutes into the fourth before SBU regained the lead just 52 seconds later on a tally from Dillon.

Canisius took its only lead of the contest moments after Dillon's equalizer, as Roy tied the game and Biglin completed his hat trick to put the Griffs in front, 9-8, with just under 10 minutes remaining.

St. Bonaventure roared back in front following Biglin's go-ahead marker, using goals from Kucinski and Shanahan less than two minutes apart to move back in front, 10-9.

Huber sent the game to overtime, bouncing a shot past Farmer with 11 seconds remaining to knot the score at 10-10.
In overtime, Canisius won the draw and had the first chance at the game winner, but a shot attempt from sophomore Lowen Martin was stopped by Farmer, allowing St. Bonaventure to race up field and eventually work the ball to Maracle, who beat Matott from the left side to give the Bonnies the victory.

Earlier in the contest, St. Bonaventure used goals from four different players over the opening 14-plus minutes of the contest to grab an early 4-1 lead, only to see Canisius answer back with back-to-back tallies to make it a one-goal game early in the second quarter.

The Bonnies countered with a pair of goals to regain their three-goal cushion, 6-3, but the Griffs responded with the final two goals of the opening half to make it a 6-5 contest at the break.

The teams exchanged single tallies during the third to keep it a one-goal game heading into the fourth quarter, setting the scene for the game's frantic finish.

HEAD COACH MARK MIYASHITA'S POSTGAME COMMENTS
"It was a 60-plus minute battle, which we knew and expected going into this game. Disappointed with us not getting one more goal there to get the win after battling hard to come back. But there's a lot that we can build on; some positive things that we've been wanting to get going with our transition game that happened today, which was a plus. We've got to learn to cut down on the mistakes. Especially self-inflicted mistakes, which has cost us too many goals this year and today was no different. ?

"I love the resilience and the never say die type attitude and effort that we saw from the guys in the fourth quarter, which is something that we expect from this group. But we had other opportunities that we didn't take advantage of and again, we've got to continue to learn quickly from these things and that's kind of the good news about non-conference play. You get to try some different things and see where you are at. We've got to remember Saturday is a big conference game and our goal is to be 1-0 on Saturday.

"Mark (Matott) played hard today. Obviously, as a team we didn't have the start that we wanted. But, near the end of the second quarter, he made some huge saves for us, which helped to keep us in the game. Proud of the effort he gave us today. He did a great job, which was awesome. We're lucky to have four goalies that we can rely on when we need them."
