Grand Slam Lifts Baseball to Series Opening Win at Delaware

Redshirt junior Thomas Zwirecki belted a grand slam in the third inning to spark Canisius to a 7–5 win over Delaware at Bob Hannah Stadium in Newark, Del.

Senior Felix Morin picked up the win for Canisius (3-7), going five innings and tallying five strikeouts. Fellow senior Sam Staerker picked up the four-inning save, allowing just one hit and five strikeouts.

Zwirecki's third-inning blast highlighted a day at the plate that saw him finish 2-for-5 with four RBI. He was one of three Canisius batters to record multiple hits as redshirt freshman Bennett Cox finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored while senior Owen Silliman also went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Ryan McLaughlin was credited with the loss for the Blue Hens (5-9) after surrendering five runs over four innings on the mound, recording two strikeouts.

Delaware struck first in the bottom of the second as Sam Winsett delivered a two-out single that scored LT Cockrill from second to give the Blue Hens a 1–0 lead.

The Griffs responded in the following inning, loading the bases for Zwirecki, who launched a 2-2 pitch over the left-field fence for a grand slam that gave the Griffs a 4–1 lead.

The Blue Hens chipped into the Canisius advantage in the bottom of the third, scoring on a throwing error to first to make it a 4–2 ballgame.

Reigning MAAC Rookie of the Week freshman Grady Brown pushed the Griffs lead back to three in the top of the fourth, lifting a sacrifice fly to right to make it 5–2.

Delaware responded in the bottom half of the inning, adding a run on an RBI single from Sal Mineo to once again cut the Griffs advantage to two.

The Blue Hens continued to chip away at the Griffs lead in the bottom of the fifth, as Jeremy Wolf lifted a sacrifice fly to trim the deficit to 5–4.

Canisius added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh, first on an RBI single from senior Mason Cisco and later on a sacrifice fly to right from junior JC Spinosa, extending the Griffs lead to 7–4.

Delaware answered in the bottom half with an RBI groundout from Jeremy Wolf to make it a 7-5 contest, but the rally fell short as Canisius held on for the two-run victory.
