Rider’s Big Fifth Inning Dooms Baseball in Series Opener

Rider plated 13 runs on eight hits during an error-filled fifth inning to cruise to a 15-3 win over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference baseball action Friday at Sonny Pittaro Field in Lawrenceville, N.J.

The Broncs improved to 13-6 overall and 9-2 in the MAAC, while the Griffs dropped to 5-14 overall and 2-5 in conference play.

Nick Shuhet drove in three runs while Matt Leahy and Charley Magoulick added two RBI each to pace the high-powered Broncs lineup. PJ Craig earned the win for Rider to improve to 2-1, tossing eight full innings and allowing just four hits and two runs.

Senior Felix Morin fell to 1-4 on the mound with Friday's loss, surrendering 12 unearned runs on seven hits in 4.2 innings of work.

The Griffs opened the scoring in the third as redshirt freshman Bennett Cox brought in the game's first run with a sac fly to right. Redshirt sophomore Tyson Kaufman followed with an RBI single up the middle to make it 2-0 Canisius.

Rider blew the game wide open in the fifth inning, scoring 13 runs on eight hits and four errors. Seven of those hits came with two outs, including a bases-clearing three-run double from Nick Shuhet that propelled the Broncs to a 13-2 lead.

Rider extended its lead in its final two at-bats, as Erich Hartman and Magoulick posted RBI groundouts in the seventh and eighth innings, respectively, as Rider extended its advantage to 13.

The Griffs plated one run in the ninth on an RBI single from junior Eric Weeks, but the Broncs kept Canisius from adding to its total as it closed out the series-opening win.
