Softball Swept by Siena

Siena junior pitcher Gracie Goewey earned a pair of wins in the circle to help lead the visiting Saints to a sweep of Canisius in MAAC softball action Tuesday evening at the Demske Sports Complex.

In game one, Goewey went the distance and fanned 10, as Siena scored a 6-1 victory over the Golden Griffins. In the nightcap, Goewey picked up her fifth win of the season in relief after the Saints scored six times in the top-half of the sixth en route to the 8-7 victory. Siena improved to 12-9 overall and 5-3 with the two wins, while Canisius fell to 5-14 overall and 1-6 in conference play with the pair of losses.

For Canisius, junior Alyssa Onyeagwa recorded a pair of hits in the nightcap, highlighted by her second home run of the season, while sophomore Grace Walker recorded her first multi-RBI game of the season after she drove in a pair of runs for the Blue and Gold in the day's second game.

GAME ONE RECAP
Siena scored a run in the top of the first and then added four more runs in the third to pull away towards the 6-1 victory in the day's first game. Goewey, Ella Mulante and Gianna DiMeglio all drove in a run during the four-run third inning for Siena, with DiMeglio's two-RBI double off the fence in center field with two outs serving as the key hit for the Saints.

Canisius answered with its lone run in the home-half of the third. With the bases loaded and no outs, a sacrifice-fly off the bat of senior Sofia Escoto allowed teammate Ella Johel to jog home from third to make the score 5-1 in favor of the Saints. But Goewey ended the Griffs' threat in the third with a line-drive out and then a strikeout, one of her 10 Ks on the day in the first game.

Goewey picked up the win in circle after she allowed just that one run on two hits to go with her 10 strikeouts and four walks. Sophomore Bella Martin and Walker each had a hit in the losing cause. Canisius starter Liv Herrington took the loss for the Blue and Gold after she allowed five runs, only one of which was earned, on six hits to go with a pair of strikeouts in 2.2 innings of work.

GAME TWO RECAP
In the second game, Canisius trailed Siena 2-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth, before the Griffs scored three times to take a 4-2 lead. In that frame, freshman Maddy Hans and Onyeagwa dropped down bunt base hits to load the bases for Canisius with one out. After Siena starter Violet Marta got the second out of the frame with a strikeout, Escoto ripped a line drive base hit in the infield, which allowed sophomore Mia Martin to score and knot the game at 2-2. Moments later, Walker singled through the right side of the infield to push a pair across the plate, giving the Griffs a 4-2 lead. Goewey came on in relief of Marta and quickly loaded the bases back up with a two-out walk to freshman Mia Preuhs, but Goewey ended the Griffs' scoring threat by getting a ground-ball out to end the frame.

Siena broke the game open with a six-run sixth inning, where the Saints sent 10 batters to the plate. The big blow in that inning came off the bat of pinch-hitter Cali DeLawder, who took a 3-1 pitch over the fence in right center for a three-run homer to put Siena in the lead at 5-4. A two-run double by Chloe Cummings and an RBI-single from Emma Peterson later in the inning made the score 8-4 in favor of the visiting team.

Canisius trimmed Siena's lead to 8-6 in the home-half of the sixth thanks to a two-run homer by Onyeagwa, her second home run as a Griff. In the seventh, Johel made the score 8-7 with an RBI-double to the gap in left center that allowed pinch runner Talia Yermain to score, but Goewey got a pop-up in the infield with two outs and the tying run on second to secure the victory for Siena.

Canisius had 11 hits in the game two loss, as Onyeagwa, Escoto and Preuhs all recorded multiple hits in the contest. Onyeagwa had two RBI and scored twice in the contest, while freshman Maddy Hans went 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored for the Griffs.

GAME NOTES

• Preuhs' two hits in the second game are the first two hits of her college career.
• Hans is now a perfect 3-for-3 in stolen base chances after she swiped a bag in the second game.
