Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Drops a Pair of Games at Buffalo

The host Buffalo Bulls scored twice in the bottom of the seventh in the second game of a doubleheader to record a 4-3 walk-off win and sweep Canisius in non-conference softball action Wednesday afternoon at Nan Harvey Field in Buffalo, N.Y.

The Bulls earned a 5-2 win in the first game and improved to 12-17 on the season with the two wins, while the Golden Griffins slipped to 5-16 overall.

GAME ONE RECAP
Buffalo scored three times in the first and then tacked on single runs in the third and fourth to take a 5-0 lead over Canisius in the first game of the twinbill. The Griffs got on the scoreboard in the top-half of the sixth thanks to a solo homer by junior Rebecca Hai, her first home run of the season. Trailing 5-1 heading into the seventh, junior Ella Johel reached on a one-out single and then came around to score on an RBI-double by freshman Talia Yermian. However, Buffalo pitcher Genevieve Longsdorf ended the Griffs' comeback threat by getting a ground-ball out after Yermian's two-base hit to seal the win for the Bulls.

Longsdorf earned the win in the circle to move to 4-3 on the season after she allowed two runs on five hits along with four strikeouts. Yermian was the only Griff with multiple hits in the losing cause, while fellow freshman Maddy Hans added a base hit to the cause as well.

GAME TWO RECAP
In the fourth inning of the second game, back-to-back RBI-singles by Alyssa Onyeagwa and Bailey Alatorre turned a 1-1 ball game into a 3-1 Canisius lead. In the bottom of the fourth, the Bulls cut the Griffs' lead to 3-2 thanks to a solo homer over the fence in centerfield off the bat of Ardyn Hopf.

In the home-half of the seventh, UB loaded the bases with no one out, setting the stage for Abbey Nagel. Nagel was able to drop a ball in left field that was misplayed by the Canisius defense, allowing two runs to score, giving the Bulls the 4-3 comeback victory.

Five different Griffs have multi-hit games in the game-two defeat as the Griffs banged out 12 hits on the day. Onyeagwa, Alatorre, Johel, Hans and Hai all had two base hits in the game, while Onyeagwa, Hai and Yermian all recorded stolen bases, as well.

GAME NOTES
• Canisius leads the all-time series with Buffalo, 34-26. The Bulls have defeated the Griffs in the last four meetings, dating back to last season.
• After not having played at Buffalo's Nan Harvey Field in nine seasons prior to last year, the Griffs have now met the Bulls on the road in each of the last two seasons.
• All 12 of the Griffs' hits in the nightcap were singles.
• Hai's homer in game one was her second career home run, and it also serves as her first extra-base hit this season.
• Johel has now reached base safely in each of the last four games that she has played in, while Hans extended her streak of getting on to three straight games.

UP NEXT
Canisius will be back home to play Fairfield on March 28 and March 29. Because of the forecasted low temperatures, Saturday will feature just one game, starting at 1 p.m., and then the two teams will play a MAAC doubleheader Sunday at the Demske Sports Complex, with game one set for 11 a.m.
