Men’s Lacrosse Defeated by League-Leading Sacred Heart

Matt Pepe tallied a game-high six points to lead Sacred Heart to an 18-12 victory in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's lacrosse action Saturday at Campus Field in Fairfield, Conn.
 
Pepe tallied two goals and added four assists for the Pioneers (8-0, 3-0 MAAC), who remained undefeated on the season with the victory. Jake Carney notched four goals and an assist while John Murray pitched three goals and an assist. Craig Daria notched 10 saves between the pipes.
 
Sophomore Carson Christy tallied two goals while freshman Cooper Anderson registered a goal and an assist for the Golden Griffins (3-6, 2-1 MAAC). Senior Micah Hanson went 14-for-19 at the faceoff "X" and added four ground balls. Redshirt freshman Sam Kosloski got the start in goal and made eight saves before being replaced redshirt sophomore Brady Robinson, who made two saves in the fourth quarter.  
 
Sacred Heart never trailed in the contest, using a pair of tallies from Pepe to open the contest with four unanswered goals to grab the early lead.
 
Canisius responded with three of the next four goals to trim the deficit to 5-3 early in the second quarter, only to see the Pioneers respond with the final four games of the first half to carry a 9-3 lead into the locker room.
 
SHU continued its dominance in the second half, outscoring Canisius by a 6-2 margin in the third quarter to grab a 15-5 lead heading into the fourth, where it closed out the contest by notching three of the last four goals of the game to complete the victory.  
 
GAME NOTES
• Sacred Heart outshot Canisius by a 44-38 margin, highlighted by an 8-4 edge in the third quarter.
• The Pioneers was 1-for-1 in man-up situations while the Griffs were 1-for-5 with the extra attacker.
• Canisius was charged with 17 turnovers in the contest, the second fewest miscues in game for the Griffs this season.
• Anderson and Belles both recorded their first career goals during Saturday's contest.
• Hanson finished with 14-or-more faceoff wins in a game for the seventh time this season with his 14-for-19 performance at the "X" on Saturday.
• Christy notched multiple goals in a game for the fourth time this season with his two-goal performance.
 
UP NEXT
Canisius travels to defending MAAC tournament champion Siena March 28 for a MAAC contest.
 
Opening faceoff for the matchup between the Griffs and Saints is slated for noon at Hickey Field at Loudonville, N.Y.
