Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Scores Split at Sacred Heart

Canisius junior Ella Johel went 3-for-3 with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored, and sophomore Mikaila Obenrader earned her first career MAAC win in the circle as the Golden Griffins bounced back and posted a 9-1 win in five innings in the second game of a MAAC doubleheader with Sacred Heart Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Park in Fairfield, Conn.

The win in the nightcap snapped the Griffs' six-game losing streak. Canisius is now 5-9 overall and 1-1 in MAAC play. The Pioneers, who won the first game, 6-2, are now 6-13 overall and 3-2 in league games.

GAME ONE RECAP
Sacred Heart's Cierra Bender went 2-for-3 with a double, five RBI and a run scored as the host Pioneer took the first game from Canisius, 6-2. Leading 2-0 heading into the home-half of the fourth, Bender cleared the bases with a three-run double to left to give Sacred Heart a 5-0 lead, and moments later, she scored on an RBI-single to right by teammate Sam Kowalski to make the score 6-0 in favor of the home team.

Canisius put up its two runs in the fifth thanks to a two-run homer off the bat of Johel, who accounted for two of the Griffs' seven hits in the losing effort. Johel's homer pushed freshman teammate Maddy Hans across the plate as well. Hans started off the fifth inning with a base hit, one of her two hits on the day.

Kowalski moved her record to 4-5 on the year in the circle after she went the distance and scattered seven hits while giving up two runs. She also fanned seven and walked six, as Canisius ended the first game of the day with seven runners left on base. Canisius junior Olivia Manchester took the loss after she gave up four runs on six hits over 3.0 innings of work. Sophomore Liv Herrington gave up two runs on two hits while striking out a pair in 3.0 innings of relief.

GAME TWO RECAP
With the game tied 1-1 in the third, Canisius broke the contest open in the top-half of the third thanks to a five-run frame, as the Blue and Gold cruised to a 9-1 victory in five innings. Canisius sent nine batters to the plate in the third, with the biggest hit coming off the bat of Johel, who smacked her second homer of the day, a three-run shot, that gave the Griffs a 6-1 lead.

The five-run rally in the third proved to be more than enough support for Obenrader, who improved her record to 1-3 on the season after she allowed just one run on four hits in the complete-game effort. Sacred Heart starter Emily Heath fell to 1-7 on the year after she gave up seven runs, six earned, on 10 hits, over 3.1 innings of work.

Despite winning via mercy rule in five innings, the Blue and Gold banged out a season-high 14 hits in the victory, with five different players posting multi-hit efforts in the win. In addition to Johel's three hits, sophomore Bella Martin went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, senior Bailey Alatorre had two base hits and drove in a run, sophomore Grace Walker had two hits and scored twice and junior Rebecca Hai had two base knocks, drove in two runs and scored a run, as well.
