Sacred Heart Takes Series with Win over Softball

Sacred Heart starting pitcher Sam Kowalski earned her second win of the weekend in the circle after she gave up a run on five hits to go with seven strikeouts, as the host Pioneers scored a 4-1 win over Canisius in MAAC softball action Sunday afternoon at Pioneer Park in Fairfield, Conn.

Sacred Heart, which won two of three games in the league series, improved to 7-13 overall and 4-2 in MAAC play with Sunday's win, while the loss dropped Golden Griffins to 5-10 overall and 1-2 in conference action.

GAME RECAP
Trailing 1-0 in the top of the sixth, Canisius had a pair of runners on with one out, but Kowalski got out of trouble by inducing a double-play ball that ended the threat for the Griffs. In the home-half of that inning, Sacred Heart scored three runs, with the key hit coming off the bat of Elle Leckrone, who drove in a pair of runs and that stretched Sacred Heart's lead to 3-0 with a base hit to right field. Moments later, Cierra Bender lined a base hit to left field, which allowed another run to score, giving the Pioneers a 4-0 advantage.

Canisius' lone run came in the top half of the seventh after junior Rebecca Hai drove in a run with a base hit to right, which allowed freshman Talia Yermain to score from second base. Yermain reached second thanks to a one-out double in the frame, the Griffs' only extra-base hit of the afternoon.

Sophomore Mikaila Obenrader took the loss in the circle for the Blue and Gold after she allowed one run, an unearned run, on five hits of 2.2 innings of work. Five different Griffs, including Hai and Yermain, had base hits in the loss for Canisius. Junior Ella Johel, sophomore Bella Martin and senior Sofia Escoto all recorded base knocks for the Griffs.

GAME NOTES
• Canisius is now 5-2 all-time against Sacred Heart.
• Johel extended her streak of reaching base safely to six straight with her base hit in the sixth, while Escoto moved her hit streak to five-straight games with her single in the same inning.
• Yermian's double in the seventh inning is her second two-base hit of the season. She is one of five Griffs with multiple doubles to their credit this year.
• Hai closed out the weekend with three RBI after she was credited with a pair in Canisius' 9-1 win over Sacred Heart on Saturday. She now has five RBI this season, which is a career high.
