Quinnipiac's Second Quarter Run Downs Women's Basketball

Quinnipiac opened the second quarter on an 18-4 run to take control of the contest as it rolled to a 73-55 win over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's basketball action Thursday at the Koessler Athletic Center in Buffalo, N.Y.

The Bobcats improved to 19-4 overall and remained perfect in conference action with a 13-0 record. The Golden Griffins, meanwhile, fell to 4-19 overall and 2-12 in league action.

Anna Foley scored 16 points, Karson Martin pitched in 14 and Jackie Grisdale added in 12 for the visitors, who picked up their 13th consecutive victory with Thursday's triumph. Quinnipiac shot 50.0 percent (31-for-62) from the field and were 31.3 percent (5-for-16) from deep.

Sophomore Yasmine Djibril led all players with a career-high 20 points. Junior Shariah Gailes added 13 points, joining Djibril in double figures. Senior Franka Wittenberg grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. The Griffs shot 39.2 percent (20-for-51) from the floor and were just 3-of-15 (.200) from three-point land.

Trailing 11-8 at the start of the second quarter, Quinnipiac knocked down seven of its first nine field goal attempts in the frame as it turned its three-point deficit into a 26-15 cushion midway through the stanza. Six different Bobcats scored during the game-changing spurt, with Martin leading the way with five points and Foley close behind with four.

Carrying a 35-25 lead into the second half, Quinnipiac took advantage of an 11-0 spurt that spanned both quarters to grab a 63-36 lead early in the fourth.

The Bobcats took their largest lead of the contest, 73-42, with just over four minutes remaining before a layup by Gailes ignited a 13-0 stretch for the Griffs that stretched to the final buzzer and determined the 18-point margin of victory for the visitors.
