Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Comeback Stunted by Iona

Sophomore Yasmine Djibril scored a game-high 15 points, but it wasn't enough as Iona recorded a 52-45 win over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's basketball action Thursday inside the Hynes Athletic Center in New Rochelle, N.Y.

Iona improved to 15-11 overall and 8-8 in conference action with the win. The Golden Griffins fell to 4-20 overall and 2-13 in league play.

The Gaels were led by Issabellah Middleton who turned in a double-double with 15 points and a 13 rebounds. Middleton was the only Iona player to reach double figures as Mya Zaccagnini and Zoey Ward pitched in eight points each as the Gaels finished the night shooting a chilly 27.9% (17-for-61) from the field, including a 5-for-20 effort (.250) from three-point range.

Junior Shariah Gailes posted a team-best 13 rebounds and added six points. Canisius shot 27.3 percent (15-for-55) from the floor for the contest and was just 3-of-16 (.188) from beyond the arc.

Iona jumped in front early, claiming an 18-8 lead after one quarter of play. The Gaels held a 26-16 advantage with 2:27 left in the second quarter before a 6-2 Canisius surge, closed the gap to 26-22 at the halfway mark.

Canisius continued to battle back into the contest during the third quarter, using a 10-2 run out of the intermission to take a 32-30 lead off a 3-pointer from freshman guard Molly Mescall.

Iona used baskets on consecutive trips to retake the lead, only to Djibril knock down three free throws in two trips to the charity stripe and senior Franka Whittenberg convert a layup to give the Blue and Gold a 37-34 lead, their largest of the contest with just over three minutes to play in the third.

The Gaels took control of the contest from there, scoring the next 11 points of the game to build a 45-38 cushion with four minutes to play in the fourth. A 5-2 spurt from the Griffs over the next three-plus minutes of play made it a five-point game, but Iona converted five of its final six free-throw attempts to secure the seven-point victory.
