Baseball Shuts Down Towson to Secure Series Win

The Canisius pitching staff combined to record 10 strikeouts in a 4-2 victory over Towson in collegiate baseball action Saturday at Harford Community College in Harford, Md.

Senior Joe LoPinto got the start on the mound for the Griffs (2-6), tossing three innings while allowing two earned runs and striking out three. Freshman Mark Rogers recorded his first collegiate win, turning in a team-best four strikeouts, while junior Jacob Hageman secured his first save of the season, shutting the door with two scoreless innings and three strikeouts to closeout the victory.

Towson's Liam Diehl was credited with the loss for the Tigers (4-4) after surrendering four runs over 2.2 innings of work, recording two strikeouts.

Canisius wasted no time getting on the board in the top of the first as redshirt sophomore Tyson Kaufman gave the Griffs a 1-0 lead on a fielder's choice that scored redshirt freshman Bennett Cox.

The Griffs offense stayed hot in the second inning as senior Owen Silliman continued his strong series with a triple to center field that brought home graduate student Tyler Hoover. Later in the frame, redshirt sophomore Justin Bremner recorded his third RBI of the season with a bases-loaded walk, extending the Canisius advantage to 3-0.

Freshman Grady Brown added to the Griffs' cushion in the third inning, collecting his second hit of the series with a single to right field to push the Canisius advantage to four.

The Tigers answered in the bottom half of the frame, capitalizing on a bases-loaded opportunity with a hit-by-pitch and an RBI single from Keldrin Rodriguez to trim the deficit in half and make it a 4-2 ballgame.

The Canisius pitching staff, consisting of Rogers, sophomore Noah Albano and Hageman halted the Tigers' comeback attempt as they combined to allow just five hits while striking out seven to secure the 4-2 victory.
