Late Home Run Lifts Baseball Past Towson for First Win

Senior Owen Silliman hit a solo home run in the seventh inning and senior Sam Staerker pitched three scoreless innings to lift Canisius to a 3-2 victory over Towson in collegiate baseball action Friday at Harford Community College in Harford, Md.
 
Senior Felix Morin made his third start of the season on the mound for the Golden Griffins (1-6), tossing five full innings while allowing two earned runs and striking out five. Staerker slammed the door shut, delivering three scoreless innings without surrendering a hit and recording five strikeouts to secure the first win of his collegiate career.
 
Aden Knowles was credited with the loss for the Tigers (4-3) after surrendering four hits and one run in 5.1 innings of relief.
 
Towson opened the scoring in the bottom half of the second on a single from Yariel Rodriguez to give Towson an early 1-0 advantage.
 
The Griffs responded in the top half of the third as sophomore Bennett Cox reached on a fielder's choice before stealing third and coming around to score on a Tigers throwing error to knot the game at 1–1.
 
Freshman Grady Brown made an immediate impact in his first collegiate start, delivering an RBI single in the fourth inning for his first career hit to give Canisius a 2–1 lead.
 
Towson quickly answered in the home half of the inning, as Brady Nathison lifted a sacrifice fly to even the score at 2–2.
 
Silliman proved to be the difference-maker in the contest, launching a solo home run in the top of the seventh to give the Griffs a 3–2 lead.
 
Staerker closed out the game on the mound, facing just one batter over the minimum over the final three innings to secure the win for Canisius.
 
GAME NOTES
• Canisius picked up its first win over Towson with Friday's victory. 
• Staerker recorded a career-high five strikeouts in his appearance on Friday, surpassing his previous personal best of four, set on two prior occasions. 
• Brown recorded his first collegiate hit and RBI with his single in the fourth.
• Silliman's game-winning blast in the seventh was his first home run in a Griffs uniform.
• Redshirt junior Thomas Zwirecki tallied multiple hits for the fourth time this season, going 2-for-3 at the plate.
• The Griffs' pitching staff recorded 11 strikeouts compared to the Tigers' eight.

Canisius continues its series at Towson on Saturday. First pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Harford Community College.
