Baseball Drops Series Finale at UNCG

UNC Greensboro pitchers Hunter Shuey and Thomas Hester combined to hold Canisius to just two hits over seven innings of work as the Spartans posted a 12-2 victory over Canisius in collegiate baseball action Sunday at the UNCG Baseball Stadium in Greensboro, N.C.

UNCG completed the sweep of the three-game series to even its season mark at 4-4. The Golden Griffins, meanwhile, dropped to 0-6 on the campaign with Sunday's setback.

Shuey picked up his first win of the season, going five innings with two earned runs and eight strikeouts. Hester closed out the contest, registering his first save of the season after hurling two shutout innings in relief.

Sophomore Brian Smith fell to 0-1 after going 2.1 innings, allowing four earned runs while recording four strikeouts.

UNCG got off to a quick start in the bottom of the first, scoring on a sacrifice fly before adding three more runs on doubles from Luke Jenkins and Jacob Budzik to take an early 4-0 lead.

Canisius answered in the top of the fourth, cutting the deficit in half. Redshirt sophomore Tyson Kaufman worked a bases-loaded walk to bring in the Griffs first run while a passed ball later in the inning allowed senior Owen Silliman to score to make it a 4-2 ballgame.

UNCG added to its lead in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single to left field that brought home a run, extending the advantage to 5-2.

The Spartans broke the game open in the bottom of the seventh, erupting for seven runs to evoke the 10-rule mercy rule. The Spartans recorded five hits in the frame, highlighted by a single and a bases-clearing triple from Brantley Truitt, to secure the win.
