Baseball Falls Short at UNCG

Redshirt sophomore Justin Bremner went 3-for-5 at the plate, but it wasn't enough to overcome a late surge as UNCG pulled away for a 7-3 victory over Canisius in non-conference action Saturday at UNCG Baseball Stadium in Greensboro, N.C.

With the win, the Spartans improved to 3-4 on the season. The Griffs fell to 0-5 early in its non-conference slate.

Nolan Winfield was credited with the win, going 3.1 innings with one earned run and two strikeouts. Junior Jacob Hageman fell to 0-1 on the season after coming in on relief of fellow junior Joe Lopinto, who exited after five innings of work, allowing four hits, three earned runs, and two walks.

The Griffs jumped out to a fast start as senior Mason Cisco was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the top of the first inning, forcing in the game's opening run. Bremner followed with an RBI single to give Canisius an early 2-0 advantage.

UNCG took the lead in the bottom half of the fifth, stringing together a single and a double to drive in three runs and move ahead, 3-2.

The top of the sixth saw the Griffs answer back as junior JC Spinosa singled up the middle and later came home on a sacrifice fly by redshirt junior Thomas Zwirecki, leveling the score at 3-3.

UNCG regained the lead in the home half of the sixth on an RBI single off the bat of Brantley Truitt before plating three runs on a pair of triples and a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the the eighth to pull ahead 7-3 and secure the game-two victory.
