Baseball Falls to UNCG in Series Opener Friday

Senior left-hand pitcher Felix Morin pitched six innings with eight strikeouts as Canisius suffered a 3-1 setback at UNC Greensboro in collegiate baseball action Friday at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.

The Spartans picked up their second straight win to improve to 2-4, while the Griffs fell to 0-4. UNCG's Noah Chapman got the nod for the Spartans on the mound, allowing one run over six innings while striking out 12. Ethan Nobles came in on relief and picked up the win, surrendering one hit in a shutout seventh inning.

Senior Sam Staerker took the loss after entering in relief of Morin, allowing two runs on one hit and one walk in two innings of work.

The Spartans struck in the bottom of the first, scoring a run on a fielder's choice to take an early 1-0 lead.

Canisius responded in the top half of the third inning as redshirt junior catcher Thomas Zwirecki ripped a double deep to center field that scored redshirt freshman Bennett Cox from first base.

UNCG broke through in the bottom of the seventh with a two-run home run to right field. The blast stretched the lead to two and ultimately proved to be the difference, as UNCG closed out the 3-1 win.
