Women's Basketball Drops Matinee at Manhattan

Manhattan's Brianna Davis scored a game-high 28 points to lead the host Jaspers to a 68-55 victory over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at Draddy Gymnasium in Riverdale, N.Y.

With the win, Manhattan improved to 7-18 and 7-9 in conference play. Canisius fell to 4-21 overall and 2-14 in league action with the loss.

For Canisius, senior Franka Wittenberg posted a team-high 14 points, while junior Shariah Gailes recorded her third double-double performance of the season after she scored 12 points to go with 13 rebounds. The 13-rebound effort against the Jaspers marks the second conseuctive game where Gailes grabbed 13 boards after she also had 13 rebounds at Iona on Thursday.

Davis was one of three Jaspers to finish with double-digits in the scoring column. Elisa Solé Sanchez scored 17 points and teammate Hana Muhl chipped in 11 points to the winning cause.

A mid-range jumper from Gailes gave Canisius the first points of the contest, but Manhattan answered with a 7-0 run to take a lead that the Jaspers would not give back the rest of the way. With Manhattan leading 18-7 in the closing seconds of the opening quarter, sophomore Yasmine Djibril nailed a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to trim the Jaspers' lead to 18-10 after the opening 10:00 of play.

Trailing 29-19 midway through the second quarter, Canisius used a 6-0 run over the span of 2:04 to trim Manhattan's cushion to four at 29-24 with 3:19 left before intermission. However, the Davis scored seven of Manhattan's 10 points in a scoring surge over the final 3:04 of the opening half to send the Jaspers into the locker room up 39-25 at the halftime break.

Out of the intermission, Gailes scored the first four points of the third quarter to get the Blue and Gold within 10 at 39-29, but Manhattan answered by scoring eight of the contest's next 11 points, capped by a 3-pointer from Davis, to stretch its hold to 47-31 with 5:34 left in the third. In the fourth quarters, Manhattan's lead ballooned to as many as 17 points before the Griffs used a 10-2 run over the span of 3:30 to cut the Jaspers' hold to 64-55 with 2:39 left on the clock. But that would be as close as the Griffs would get down the stretch, as Manhattan scored the contest's final four points in the game's closing 1:02.

For the game, Canisius out-rebounded Manhattan by a 37-35 clip, with 15 of the Griffs' rebounds coming off the offensive glass. Gailes was credited with five of those 15 offensive boards. The Griffs also registered four steals on the day, with three of those being credited to Djibril.
