Rider Defeats Women's Basketball in Overtime

Rider's Kaylan Deveney nailed the game-winning three with six seconds remaining in overtime to lead the visiting Broncs to a 55-53 victory over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's basketball action Thursday at the Koessler Athletic Center in Buffalo, N.Y.

Rider (7-19, 5-12 MAAC) was paced by Aliya McIver, who tallied a team-high 16 points, while teammate Alena Cofield pitched in 13 in the win. McIver and Cofield also teamed up for 17 rebounds as the Broncs led the battle on the glass, 47-43.

Senior Franka Wittenberg paced the Golden Griffins (4-22, 2-15 MAAC) with a game-best 17 points. Sophomore Yasmine Djibril joined Wittenberg in double figures, chipping in 13 points. As a team, the Golden Griffins bested the Broncs in the paint by a 28-24 margin.

Trailing 41-32 with 3:44 left in regulation, Canisius was able to force an extra session thanks to a 13-4 run. Ten of Canisius' 13 points came out of the hands of Wittenberg while the Blue and Gold also recorded two steals in the final minute of play to send the game to overtime.

After both sides traded scores to start the extra session, Canisius jumped in the driver's seat with a free throw from junior Shariah Gales and a conventional three-point play from Wittenberg to grab a 53-49 lead with 1:41 remaining.

Rider battled back into the contest, going 3-for-4 from the charity stripe in the final minute and a half to narrow the deficit to just one. Trailing with by one on its final possession, the Broncs completed the comeback by kicking the ball out to the left corner, where Deveney drained her 3-pointer to put Rider in front.

On the game's final possession, Canisius attempted a full court heave to Wittenberg who was waiting under the rim, but her layup attempt rimmed out, securing the victory for the visiting Broncs.
